I hate ranting on discussions but I am actually going to try and make a point, and feel free to comment however you see it.
I am absolutely SICK of people telling me that school is not work and that I will have to face reality when I get out of school. People continuously make remarks about how I don't have any work to do until I start my summer job, but I have some things to say to that:
- University is a full time job! Even though I may not have classes from 8 to 5, I do have chapters to read, novels to read, 10-15 page essays to write and many students also have part-time jobs to worry about. My "job" doesn't stop at 5 like most peoples - many nights I am up until 4 o'clock in the morning trying to finish all of the work that has pilled up and then getting up at 7 to start it all over again!
- Even though I am trying to better my own life (and in turn society by getting a job that I must be specialized to have), I have the hardest time staying a float and not going completely broke or in debt. It isn't uncommon for students to actually have to eat nothing but noodles or kraft dinner for a couple of weeks because they can literally afford nothing else after paying rent, tuition, and school books. Also contrary to "popular" belief, not all parents could afford to set up funds for their children or are able to help pay for their education... most students I know are from low to middle class and they will be in debt for many years after they graduate because of all of their loans.
I hope this doesn't come across as being a "poor me" post, but I really think that the public needs to have more understanding about what we go through... comment whether you agree or not, im glad to have this off my chest lol
