Usage of new lanes on 18th St N

Something I've noticed over the last couple of weeks and am curious if I'm the only one...
On 18th street North as soon as you come off of the Daly Overpass in the Northbound lane, 80-90% of traffic seems to naturally split off into the right lane... leaving the new left lane severely under-used.
It's not so much a criticism as an observation, because yesterday I even subconsciously found myself following the herd in the right lane until I noticed a vehicle that used to be several cars behind come roaring by in the wide-open left lane.
If it isn't just happening at the times of day when I'm there, is it..
- a case of old habits die hard
- herd mentality
- a lot of really patient and/or passive drivers that want to be prepared to turn right into the Corral Central from a full ten blocks away and are afraid of not getting back in
