Sportsplex election "NUMBERS"
11/6/2010 at 1:39 PM
The election issue of keeping the Sportsplex pool open was a concern in all parts of the city.
I obtained a copy of the Sportsplex budget from city hall a couple of weeks ago.
In my opinion, after going over the budget it will cost Brandon tax payers MORE money to operate the Sportsplex IF they close the pool because it generates more money income {revenue} for the total operation than the ice arena and all other sections combined. With the pool closed the pool area will still need to be heated so other than the pool slaries (which are less than half of the salaries for the remainder of the operation} we would lose a $238,000.00 income revenue and only save the direct pool salaries costs of about $207,00.00.
I would like to see both E-Brandon and The Brandon Sun post/(print) the total budget (2006 to 2011 ) for the Sportsplex so that all citizens of Brandon can SEE the figures that our new Mayor was questioning in the election.
If all areas of Brandon have some people that want the pool kept open then we need input from all those citizens as to how to turn the operation around.
For my input:
1) Build an inside wall (close tothe south wall exterior) in the pool area with POSTIVE VENTILATION to prevent futher deterioation of the main outside wall instead of replacing the wall. If the bathroom shower wall leaks at home you do not close the whole bathroom: you put in a new shower liner.
2)Rent the round meeting room on the west end to the day care at Kirkaldy school on a full time basis.
3)Upgrade the canteen to provide PROPER types of food for the day care and the breakfast programs at the school.
4)PROMOTE competitions within the city schools for prizes and bragging rights and to help the school board increase physical activities. We have soccer, football, rugby, basketball etc. but no interschool swimming competition. WHY????
5.)Some kind of bathroom access and food promotion as well as neighborhood competitions for the toboggan hill beside the Sportsplex on the north hill.
6)Please excuse any spelling mistakes and this last one may be an attention grabber:
Pursuade "The Blue Fins" and "Brandon Youth hockey" to take over operation of the whole complex. This would save at least a large city manager's {approx 70,000.00) salary and much of the operation could be managed with part time volunteers and lower paid helpers.
How many of you want to sign up for volunteer Zambony operator lessons???
