bike law.

i already know that there is a thread started about this, but because there is already three pages, i'm worried that no one will be able to help me with the question that i have.
I'm 19 years old. I'm obviously old enough to know to ride my bike on the road, with my helmet and proper protection so that i don't get injured. however, as of april my son will be 7 months old when biking season starts, and i'll want to have him in the chariot on the back of my bike.
here's my question:
should i still bike on the road?
i really don't want to, because even though i'm being safe, as are most drivers (i hope), there's still the off chance that one of us could get hurt, and i don't want to risk that happening.
as a pedestrian, i've always moved out of the way when families have biked by because i would want people to do the same to me.
i don't need any rude people commenting on my thread, i just want to know if i should still bike on the road, or if i am allowed on the side walk.
thank you!
