Over the course of the past 2 days I have witnessed 4 vehicles run red lights. I am not talking about they were yellow and just turned red, I am talking about VERY RED lights. Two were at 6th and Victoria, 1 at first and Kirkcaldy and one at 26th and Victoria.  
I guess the most alarming thing is that soon there will be many children crossing streets during summer vacation and if you are not paying attention to other vehicles safety then you won't be to children.  
Pay attention out there before someone gets killed. If you are going to be 5 minutes late then leave 5 minutes earlier!!!

Saw this last evening, not so much running a red light, but making a right turn on a red without stopping. The vehicle made the turn as if it was a green light. Probably did that cause nobody was coming from the west and maybe in a hurry to get to TSC before closing??

As the years pass and the population grows we find that there is more and more people driving. There is no excuses for not obeying the rules of the Road, when people go to obtain their licence to drive a motor vehicle of any size or shape they are well aware of what the signs, traffic lights etc. mean. Whether they are late for an appointment, work or school etc. doesn't give them the right to ignore all the rules of the road. How will these people feel when they injure or kill someone due to their stupidity?  
Arrive alive and Safe, give yourself enough time to arrive at your destination safely for yourself and others.

as the other posts like this... There is no enforcement, and I'm certainly not blaming the police, Brandon or otherwise, as they have enough of a strain on their resources as it is!  
What we need is a Traffic Enforcement Unit, kind of similar to the Bylaw Enforcement officers, who could go out and write nothing but tickets all day for all the stupid violations that happen in the city, speeding, cell phone use, Stop and Red light running and so on!  
Without enforcement, this subject is moot!

I wish to add to this thread and say also - USE YOUR TURNING SIGNALS PEOPLE!  
 
Omfg. Every DAY I witness anywhere's from 6-7 vehicles who do NOT use their turning signals.  
 
Whether it be to turn into another lane, or turn period - no thought to anyone behind them.  
 
Remember - we can't read minds! If you're turning, use the signal PLEASE!

Whenever I see someone in Brandon with a signal light on, I almost assume it is by mistake and that they are going straight.

Brandon Police Service needs to ramp it up. On parking violations, signal violations. Part of their mandate. We get hit up for a wage increase every year via taxes, new building, new clerical staff, thousands and thousands of rounds of munitions ... part of keeping our streets safe. Not sure why we should give them a free pass? The reality is we should demand they enforce the laws, and if they don't want to, we should demand for them to be repealed.

On two occasions I was driving down Victoria and I went through two lights on orange! The vehicle two cars lengths behind me followed me through the intersection! It was blatantly red because it turned red when I was leaving the intersection! It was shocking to look in my rear view and see them drive through! It was absolutely unbelievable to see it at the next intersection, too!  

Is there anyone on this forum who has a driver's license and doesn't know that all traffic is required to stop at a red light?  
 
Does anyone actually believe that there are people with driver's licenses, out driving on our streets right now, who don't know that they are required to stop at red lights?  
 
Well, I certainly don't believe it. Everyone who goes to get a drivers license has to know this. It's basic. It's part of the written test and the road test. So, that tells me that the people who are running the red lights are doing it deliberately because they believe that they wont get caught, they're in a hurry and just don't care if they're breaking the law. They also likely think of themselves as the best drivers on the road.  
 
I could go on, but let's just say I know the type all too well.

I think half the problem is that people seem to think that yellow means 'get through if you can' whereas what it means is 'stop if you can' - safely of course. The other half just don't care and where they're going is obviously more important than the safety of everyone else on the road.  
 
For what it's worth, BPS do enforce this sometimes. The other day, a vehicle made the left turn from 18th to Victoria after the light had clearly turned red, and in fact the Victoria green had already come on and we had to pause before we could proceed. Police car right on the spot and pulled her over. Of course, this was just timing. I agree more enforcement of all the traffic violations would be great.

We can't see to do regular stop signs right as it is. Case in point is this morning on Princes Ave by MNP around 7:45AM, a person with an older van from those side streets blew the stop sign and nearly hit me.  
 
I think aBUFAmember is onto something about the meaning of yellow. On Vic. Ave and 34th st. or Vic. Ave and 18th st. , people rush through the left turn light when its yellow and almost never make it through the intersection when the left turn arrow is off. Then to top it off, the person behind who's tailgating decides to follow them when the left turn arrow is clearly off. This causes traffic going the other direction who are on a green light to either wait for that bozo to get out of the road then proceed as normal or they choose not to yield to the bozo. This is likely the cause of most of the accidents at those 2 intersections.  
 

It's scary how many people don't notice a red light. I was in a bad accident a few years ago here in Brandon because someone ran a red light...just flew right past a whole line of cars in the lane beside them and directly through the red light, I couldn't see them as they were in the further lane and there was a line of cars blocking them until it was too late and I was already in the intersection. Since then I feel like I have to be so careful going through green lights even to ensure the people with the red are actually going to stop! Wish people would understand the dangers of driving distracted!

Your dad is very right.  
Kids at kindergarten level know that red light means stop you do not necessary need driver licence to know that, so there is no excuse passing red light.  
I just want to also mention that when police car does not obey some traffic rules sometimes, makes some people wondering what is right.  
Today I was driving with car with my son sitting in the car. He saw police car did a u turn where there was no u turn sign. He mentioned it, why the police car did u turn where there is sign there? He said somebody needs to report that car.  
So what do you think he will do when he gets his driving licence in few years?

Manitoba traffic definitions:  
 
Green light - Go  
Yellow light - Go very fast  
Red Light - Stop... if you feel like it.  
 
As for turn signals, when I first moved to this province, I was convinced that they were a $5k option on new vehicles in Manitoba, and knowing how cheap people are here... well, you get the picture.  

Get cameras like every major city, and we will see a drop in this stupid crap.  
 
Cameras are also 365 and are cheaper in the long run than diverting our police force to traffic duty.

Was at a red light going west on Victoria, and a mini van was stopped at that same light heading east. Light was still red when that driver decided to just drive on through, almost got hit by a black truck coming from the south. Tell me what the heck is so important that one throws the road rules out the window???

I often do the same looking both ways in case one has forgotten to stop and I look both ways every single time when I'm on my bike to avoid being underneath a vehicle.  
I wouldn't agree too much on SnowBirds statement for blaming the police for the enforcement. Can't have a police at every traffic lights in Brandon plus have them in other places. I also see lots of pedestrians crossing streets WITHOUT looking as if they were in a field

No where do I blame BPS! What I also stated is perhaps the City should have a dedicated Traffic Enforcement Unit, LIKE the Bylaw Enforcement Unit. Their sole job would be to enforce traffic violations for whatever time they were on shift.

For those of you who are blaming the police you have got to be kidding me?! I bet if they were to enforce tickets more you would be making a thread on how they're such assholes eh? Why don't you them a break will ya?

If you read through the posts, there is only one post that "blames" the police. The other posters either don't mention the police at all, or are in support of the enforcement they do provide!  
 

Your dad was right! A red light is not a brick wall, and there are all kinds of reasons why they are run. Always drive like "they" are out to get you. Most red light runners I have seen are of the I'm in a hurry variety, but there are intersections that can confuse some, and there are some that outright suck if you don't drive there every day. Always look before you enter even if it has been green for awhile. I had the misfortune of watching a semi T-bone a car at highway speeds, the car had the green for awhile, and it was pretty scary. Thankfully no one was killed, but the car driver was seriously injured.
