Vanessa won by only 49 votes over Tyson so I think he should give it another try!

I think that's a great name. He works next door to me and I think he'd be a good choice.

I'm having problems with my iPad. I just suggested a name I heard in the last couple of days.  

this afternoon, what about Deveryn Ross? I think he would be a good choice for city council, I admire and respect him and his columns are bang on with regards to politics, whether civic, provincial or federal.

I agree with you that Ross is a good name. Smart guy with no fear of offending anyone and prepared to call it as he sees it. This is something Council needs.

So far it looks like a Deveryn - Tyson race. Who else is out there?

Would be good choices. Also they both live in the Riverview Ward which in my opinion is the only way to represent the ward.

Deveryn Tyson Mike or Grant. All four would be great choices but I too would prefer someone who actually lived in the ward.

I don't know about anyone else but years ago my go to councillor was the late great Errol Black! My own councillor wasn't interested in helping me in my fight with the city so Errol stepped up and I will never forget that!  
 
So to me the most important issue is the willingness to help ANY citizen in this city. Plus whoever gets elected should serve the whole term.  
 
It's so easy to talk about wanting to serve your constituents but put your money where your mouth is please!

Riverview (east end) is an old fashioned "community". We know our neighbors, we know who we can count on , we look out for each other. I think someone like Deveryn would absolutely understand what I am talking about. There definitely needs to be a connection to properly serve the residents. Vanessa needs to step down ASAP so we can get a councilor in place before the budget. Staying on now just makes her look like she is only there for the paycheque.

Riverview is such an important part of our community and absolutely needs a voice at the table.  
Regardless of who the councillor is, and I firmly believe Vanessa is acting with the absolute best of intentions, it is my belief that a councillor needs to step down the very minute they decide to move on.  
Every councillor represents both the ward, and 1/10 of the people of Brandon. We need the representation robust and committed.

Deveryn Ross ran for Mayor in 2006. Any legal reason for him not running for council was laid to rest at that time.

" I wouldn't exactly say "laid to rest". That past is exactly why I wouldn't vote for him and it will come up again and again. "

Deveryn Is still trying to clear his name via the court system. If he was guilty why would he bother wasting his time and money to defend himself? He has already "done his time", so to speak! Deveryn has never struck me as a dumb person!  
 
I'm not exactly a expert on legal issues but I remember that a judge ordered Deveryn's case to be reviewed due to new evidence. And that was probably over a year ago! Did you not hear that news? If a judge orders a review then there must be something wrong and needs to be rectified!

he is not the only lawyer that has been disbarred and managed to redirect his life and go onto greater things, I would have no problem in supporting him for city council and feel that he may be a better fit than some presently on concill

As they say, it's an honour just to be nominated. But while I'm a proud and satisfied Riverview resident, running for council isn't in the cards for me right now.  
 
I have a ton of respect for anyone who is willing to devote their time and energy to politics -- and probably the most respect for municipal politicians, who get the least respect, the toughest jobs and the tiniest paycheques. At this time, I don't think I have the time available to give city council the commitment it deserves.  
 
Of course, whoever does step forward, I have about a zillion ideas to improve the city and I'll gladly talk their ear off  
 
For what it's worth, Vanessa's no relation of mine, but she's always been super friendly when I run into her in area, and I have no problem continuing to represent me until the provincial election ramps up. If she stepped down immediately, I can't imagine the city organizing a byelection before Christmas anyway, and I'd rather continue to have a voice at the table. I wonder if there's a way to coordinate a civic byelection with the provincial election and save some money?

During some basement cleaning, my mom recently discovered some pamphlets from my ill-fated run for city council in the '90s, so if you can stand the wild-eyed idealism, hit me up for a copy

Deveryn ran for mayor in 2006 so that's not an issue. We should focus on the best interest of our city and not personal attacks.
