Boycott won't work
5/27/2016 at 7:45 AM
If this was a difference between Brandon and Winnipeg prices a boycott might work, but this is a situation for a commodity being in a short supply, or so we are told. Refineries run at a certain level of capacity, usually a pretty high level, and reducing capacity by 1-2 percent can result in a draw down in supplies. Gasoline prices are determined by the futures market, and that market is subject to rumours and fact, as well as supply and demand, and all play a part in setting prices.
Most of us like capitalism, but there are draw backs to it, take the idea that the cream rises to the top, which means well run companies do well and continue to grow, through acquisitions competition becomes less, and the chance of price manipulation increases by things like reducing supply. It doesn''t just happen in gas prices, but many other things as well, that is the reason for anti trust laws in countries like the US.
Capitalism works well, sometimes too well.
