The date on a calandar is just that, we could likely take dates back from the time that people began living in organized communities, and it would show that people are afraid of people who are not the same as themselves, or if things are tough they are willing to lay blame on others without looking at the society that they live in first.
Back to the idea of we aren't living in the 1800's, if that were really true history would not repeat itself because we have advanced as a society, sadly this is not true, history does repeat itself, we never really seem to learn. Fear and hatred of those who are different is human nature at it's worst. " |

Is learned - not natural.
Instinct says we should be wary of new things and people but our response to them is learned. We develop specific responses to stimuli based on experience.
Do people raise questions when Russians, Greeks, Italians, Ukranians, Poles or Latino people settle here? Then why should it be different for Syrians (other than "someone told me Syrians are Muslims and Muslims are terrorists")????
I am curious - was there a thread questioning the influx of Asians or South Americans due to Maple Leaf????
I have seen more than enough xenophobia over the Syrian refugees - and most of it with no basis in foundation. I am willing to bet if you put the Syrian refugees in a crowded room with all the other local immigrants, you would not be able to pick them out.
Ponder this: would WE be here today if the Native Americans had prevented Europeans from settling here? Were those people beneficial to the natives? Should they have been turned back when they landed in North America all those years ago??

I agree with some of your points and don't like all the propaganda that is flying around, I think you are missing some things in your points (just my opinion).
You bring up other cultures and if there was this much turmoil over them coming to Canada....at one time there was, and to some extent there still is. If we go back a couple years ago, I am sure that Canadians were not to receptive of Germans coming over for a new life. I am sure not every Korean felt acceptance and were welcomed with open arms. The point is, the cultures you mentioned in your statement are not in the midst of a massive uprising, they are considered peaceful/allies. The reason (in my opinion) is so many people link Muslims into isis and are scared, (and to a certain extent have valid reason to be scared). This is not a new thing, at one point everyone viewed all Germans as Nazis.
I also think due to lack of knowledge in other races/religions (myself included to a certain extent) people automatically hear Syrian and think Muslim. You hear Muslim right now and you think isis. This is not correct, but very hard when we have been over run with that propaganda so much right now.
I don't think if this was happening 10yrs from now and Syria was a more peaceful country there would be any issues, other then the normal racist comments (not that they should be considered normal) like any other immigrant has to listen to from ignorant anti-change people. This is just my opinion and hope that ANYONE coming to Canada or are already here in Canada would just be positive productive members of society.
