My family and I are attempting to do more and more composting and although the green bins are not picked up in the winter, we are still taking the organic matter to the green bins at 34th street and Victoria Avenue. It is extra work, but we have been so surprised at how little 'garbage' we now have because we are not putting in vegetable/fruit/egg shell/papertowel etc. waste.  
 
When we take it to the 34th location, we are absolutely appalled at what people are putting in to the yard waste/organic matter green bins. Whole trees, plastic, metal, diapers and everything else is being dumped there by people who don't care.  
 
I am trying to do my little part to help our world be a better place by sending our organic waste to the City of Brandon for them to compost....but my hard work is being contaminated, and is probably ending up in the landfill anyway!!!!  
 
What a terrible shame.

You can still put your organic matter in your green bin and it will be picked up in the spring.

I just got my green bin this summer but only use it for grass and leaves so I don't notice a big difference in the household, but the blue bins sure made me realize how much extra was being wasted before.  
 
As to people abusing the bins, I too have witnessed it, the 1st & richmond location has generally been pretty good, but the site down near rideau park has been ridiculous.  
 
I went there one time this summer and someone had filled every single bin with household garbage including mattresses and electronics, people are just too frigging lazy to drive the extra 2 kilometers to the dump, too bad there wasn't a camera and a policy to internet shame people lol.
