So they finally caught 1 guy going through cars. that's awesome to the guy caught him. 24 year old loser that get nothing done to him should have some slammed in door hands. so if he ever thinks opening a car door again he will feel pain every time

wonder if its the same guy that hit mine in january? IDK but i do know not enough is done to prevent future crimes...guy did take some odd stuff, lots of gum and i saw a hose clamp ...im sure that will fetch a lot of cash, hopefully the owner claims it lmao

Traveller ... So what would you suggest be done to prevent these guys from future crimes? Something on the part of the owner? On the part of the police? If random losers feel like walking around trying door handles, I'm not sure how much prevention can be done, aside from owners locking cars, and police patrolling problem areas. The only problem is, no one knows what area is going to be the area of choice on any given night.  
 
It's a suggestion - but to just blindly suggest not enough is being done without presenting any solutions sounds like you're just placing blame on either police or vehicle owners for not doing enough in the first place.  
 
And I agree, these guys don't get nearly enough penalty for stealing from those hard working individuals who shouldn't have to worry about parking their car on a street. It's sickening.

The guy needs a job or a life or something. From looking at the pictures on the Brandon Police Services website there's nothing of real value that he stole other than a couple cell phones and some change. The rest is all junk. People that commit crimes like this have literally nothing better to do and to do this at 8:00am when a lot of people a lot of people are going to work, your just asking to be caught. Not too smart, but that's a good thing.  
 
But while we don't know the exact circumstances, this is a good time to remind people to lock vehicle doors and either take valuables out of their vehicles or at least put them out of sight.

hmm did i rub a soft spot?  
 
we all know not enough is done to stop these guys as there is plenty of news and personal stories of petty thief's getting caught and not much happening, so my comment was just meaning that likley nothing will happen to this guy, thats all  
 
if you do want to know what i think should happen, or who is to blame, i think its a combination  
 
yes owners should take precautions but if criminals were scared of the consequences then they wouldnt have to worry about their stuff (honestly what i like about living in a small town, i dont have to really worry about my small stuff going missing)  
 
sometimes cops fail, i know they are frustrated too but sometimes they dont bother doing everything they can, i know this from personal experience after a few incidents that the cops didnt do everything they could, did they do some, yes but they also missed some, im sure they are busy with all sorts of stuff that takes priority ect but they are not perfect and could improve lots of times  
 
and of course our whole system is also to blame, from judges, who give up and dont give enough deterrent to our laws which dont give the cops or the judges the tools to help in the right way  
 
 
 

It isn't against the law to leave you doors unlocked, it is against the law to take what isn't yours.  
 
A few times I have heard people rummaging outside my house or in my neighbourhood, and I have given chase to these criminals yelling at them not to come back.  
 
Eventually it will work and if not I feels good when I do it.  
 
As for what the police can do, I live on a Main Street and never ever see cops drive by. If the police know people are breaking into cars here why wouldn't they add it into their patrol route

No - not a soft spot at all. I have been a victim of this before as well - they bent my door frame all up on my car from whatever they were trying to use as a 'slim jim'. (So, me locking it might have deterred the ones trying the handles, but I guess my Canadian Tire money was worth the damage for this guy) It just comes from frustration about these guys, and what can be done to catch them. I just wanted to know what your thoughts were on solving the problem since I certainly can't think of one - these losers skulk around all over the city at night.  
 
I agree though, that once they are caught the penalties are pathetic. No wonder people come to Canada to deal drugs and commit crimes - the cost of getting caught is nowhere near what it is compared to our neighbours to the south.

i have a few ideas of what can be done, start with harsh programs to help first time offenders realize their value in life and where a life of crime will get them, repeat offenders should have the book throw at them and made to do real work and pay restitution, right now even jail is too easy and when they get out they have no idea what to do with their lives so they go back to petty crime, sad really  
 
i know we will never stop all of them so owners do have to try and protect their stuff too even if it is illegal to steal items, locked or not  
 
in my case i think the cops could have and laid a few more charges then they did. maybe idk all the info but my take was they have arrested the guy so many times they figured why bother and let him go instead of holding him right then and there and throwing every charge they could at him, honestly the cops do know most of the criminals in town they just cant do much about them until they are caught, even then its not enough

Here's an update on this incident and what the guy was charged with.  
 
-Possession of Property Obtained by Crime X 11, Trespass by Night  
 
Following the investigation into the suspect located on Tuesday morning in the area of 34th St and Richmond Ave breaking into vehicles, a 24 year Brandon man has been charged with 11 counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Tresspass by Night and Breach of Probation. Police received reports from 11 different locations regarding vehicles being entered, as well the accused admitted to be in the yard of a residence on Waterloo Crescent. The investigating officer was able to match the stolen property to the reports and charge the accused accordingly.

even though the guy got caught and charged he will come out of the court with a slap on the wrist.  
 
I can just see how this plays out. he will be released on a promise to appear on court date, of which he won't appear so a further arrest warrant for failure to appear will be issued, when he is caught again and finally goes to court he will get a slap on the wrist, 30 days less time served, maybe community service.  
 
he has also been charged with breach of probation so he is already in the system and does not care. a hardened criminal in the making.  
 
unfortunately as a home owner if you catch and hold or try to stop him in the act and use excessive force, you will have more to lose than what was in your car or the criminal. he'll be charged with illegal entry maybe and you'll get an assault charge.  
 
maybe we should all move to the US where you have a right to protect your property with use of deadly force if necessary.
