I didn't hear it, but quite possibly it was a rodent that faulted the line. He was incentivized by the fault current and was removed from the line. A recloser will close 3 times to restore power automatically.
Yes burning a squirl could make a loud bang if the recloser closes the line that is still faulted through the squirl.
