I received my 2016 property tax assessment and it turns out my taxes have gone up 22% from last year!!! Anyone else seeing this ridiculous increase to their assessment? I'm pretty sure Vancouver didn't increase this much.

went down by 2.01 % The assessent was up, but by less than the average for Brandon. Because assessment increased, the mill rate decreased. The net result was a reduction

My property taxes went down this year not by much but for the 2014-2015 year they went up like $1000

Mine went down about 12 bucks from last year. Next time we are re-assessed I will be appealing the decision and have them redo it. What I don't like is they just up the assessment value to what they want to. Homes in my area are not going for anywhere near the assessed value. This happened in Winnipeg where the commercial businesses appealed the value and actually had their taxes lowered. This cost the city millions from last I read.

and I know that it's mostly from school taxes. thank goodness we have a mayor and council that try and keep the increases down but I am totally worried because this city needs to scale back their spending too. buses running on stats when no retail running, and wait until we see what kind of pay raises will be given to our city employees, ugh

City portion up $80 and school division up $175. Land assessment increased $30,000 and house $20,000. Apparently my 50 x 100 ft lot is very valuable, Definitely unhappy especially with the school division increase.

that's for the whole building and property, and not per unit (as, they're actually condos even though some are being rented out)? That sounds about right for those types of condos.

As a general rule,  
Each condo owner pay's taxes on the actual unit.  
The taxes you are asking about are for the area's not individually owned, the hallways, entry way, the property around the building.  
Again, a general rule, not necessarily what is happening at this location.

It seems to me that my property taxes have remained pretty consistent.  
 
The one thing that comes to mind however, is if the value of your property was reassessed due to any improvements, your property taxes will increase in the same manner..

With the overall tax increase being as minimal as it is, the increase (or decrease) any individual property sees will largely boil down to whether your re-assessment was higher or lower than the city-wide average re-assessment.

In reality, my property is in worse condition now than when we bought it because we had to gut so much of it and haven't put it back together yet (doing it slowly as we have money). But out taxes have more than doubled since 2009 when we bought, mostly due to increased assessments.  
 
If I look at Adam's link, some neighbourhoods seem to have gone up a lot, while some no so much. I'm not sure what rhyme or reason they use when deciding how much to increase the property value. When I inquired last year, they told me it was based on real estate assessments, but that's garbage because usually your assessment is less than what it will get on market, and mine is about $25,000 above what I could get even in excellent condition.

If each condo owner pays taxes as well as the taxes on the building, they actually pay more taxes than you.  
 
So, for example,  
if the condo building has 20 units and each unit pays taxes, PLUS the building pays taxes they pay more than their portion of taxes.  
 
Let's say you pay $1000.00 for your house and property.  
 
A condo owner might pay $750.00 for the unit PLUS $120 for their portion of the land.  
If the building has 20 units at $750 each plus the $120 bringing it to $870 per unit, you would multiply that by 20.  
So, $870 X 20 Units =: $17,400.00  
So while it looks like they only pay $120.00 x 20 units, ($2,400) they actually pay $17,400.  
 
So while it might look like they don't pay enough, they very well may pay MUCH more than you.

Once again my taxes went up close to $500 in one year. Taxes in this city are out of control.

First of all Kudos for Cornwallis holding the line on taxes. NO INCREASE. School Board, THUMBS DOWN, jacked my taxes 300 dollar over 15%. I cant think of another institute, company, etc that can get away with this type of increase. Especially when you know approx 90% of the School tax budget is for salaries. The province has to get involved and set a rate something close to cost of living. Its getting ridiculous.

I am sick of the increases on our tax bills from the BSD! Like you said, every single year they raise the taxes but always report a surplus!

Absolutely not true. You pay school tax whether you have kids in school or not.  
The link you provided states nothing about exemptions for no kids.

Do people who live in apartments pay school taxes.

If the BSD is pulling in $2+million in surpluses, I'd like Mark Sefton and his crew to explain why an increase of over 5% was needed for the 2016-2017 school year because I haven't read the information anywhere.  
 
It's a division of educators and they can't budget closer to the line than that? If I did my household budget like they do, I should come out way ahead every year too? Not bloody likely.  
 
I'd like the BSD to explain to taxpayers how these surpluses are miraculously appearing and how they plan to spend our money. Brandon taxpayers aren't made of money. Are these people delusional or deceitful?  
 
Absolutely ridiculous that they can't budget better than this. Now I know why Manitoba kids are at the bottom of the heap.

When we are electing trustee's, which of you in this discussion actually went and placed a vote? I'm guilty if not doing so and paying the price. Complacency is ignorance. Democracy is alive and well in our systems, we just don't use it and complain about the end result

We purchased a condo afew years ago and are kinda shocked at how much the city actually makes in taxes off of them like previously stated the condo complex itself pays taxes then we are paying way to much in taxes per unit ($1970.87 for us this year up $56.00 but times that by 43 thats alot for the amount of frontage). And we thought that when you pay taxes that was suppose to cover city services such as garbage collection which Sparky it does for your house but in a condo complex all units pay taxes but then the city charges the condo associations a fee for garbage collection. How is that not double dipping and especially when it probably saves them money by picking up 43 residents garbage at one time in two big dumpsters instead of driving around pickjng up 43 individual little bins just plain ROBBERY!!!
