Anybody know if people are allowed to park vehicles on their front lawn? People on our street use their lawn as a driveway and it's a real eyesore.

If the city keeps making new residential streets any narrower we'll all be parking on our lawns soon. Two cars can hardly go by each other on mine. I didn't know space was such an issue in Canada!  
 
As for the by-law, I think it depends on the lot setup. If they're just off the curb they may be on city property. If they're in a ways they're probably on their own property and the by-law won't help much.

You are not allowed to park on the lawn of your property, I had the By-law officer tell me that.  
I don't usually park on my lawn but in this case there were no parking signs for Snow clearing and I had no where else to park.  
She happened to be at a house on the block and questioned me about some things , and mentioned that I was not allowed to park in my yard.

instead of complaining about it go talk to the dam* person and get their reasoning about it or whatever instead of being a coward, and mind your own f'n business not your property don't look at their place if you don't like it! if you have a problem go talk to them or let it be, what possible harm is it causing you? you are the definition of a nosey annoying neighbor

Why should they talk to the person and get their reasoning when it's a law not to do it? Is talking about it going to make it any less of an eyesore? I could see if it was a few days but I'm guessing it's not like that. Don't like it? Go live somewhere else.

If they always are parking cars on the lawn it can lower property value and harder to sell your house when the time comes. Yes there is a reason...

Then why should the neighbour have to leave. Get the car off your lawn. Pretty simple. I'll never understand why that's the answer to everything on this site. People looking for advice or answers always get the "don't like it then leave" or "don't like don't look". Why doesn't the person being complained about have any responsibility or at least get sh*t on. It's ALWAYS the op. So backwards in this town.

One in particular parked a vehicle with a for sale sign on the end of there lawn, now parks in the front yard, total eye sore. Anyone can report their neighbours, pretty easy, call the bylaw officer and advise, they sound someone out same day usually. They will likely get a warning, then they follow up and then the fines start, yay!

Can people block access to your driveway? Cabs, delivery drivers and just people in general. Thanks!

I'm guessing that request would not be welcomed. I think most people are better off avoiding a possible verbal/physical dispute by using the appropriate authorities.

I am guessing not. As I said maybe they don't know about the by-law. Whatever happened to helping your neighbor out. There would be no reason to go storming over there and yelling. Go politely and just say, you notice their car on the lawn, did you know there is a by-law for that? Just wanted to inform you in case they didn't know. If they get ignorant walk away and then call by-law enforcement. At least you tried to communicate with your neighbor.

I parked "too close" to my across-the-street neighbour's front driveway and got a parking ticket for it. I was not even impeding his ability to use it but I was "too close" - can''t remember the distance but I got the ticket for it.

Yeah, and they'll also know who made the complaint. Not a smart thing to do.

I don't understand what the big deal is anyway. Let them park on their grass and ruin it. It is like some that have a double driveway - it would certainly not be affecting my life or my home. If the rest of the street is properly parked who cares if one is out of order?

I mean do you call bylaw or police? By the time anyone can attend the offending car would be long gone.  
 
Should a person go out and get a license plate number and report it to police and they can deal with the driver when they have a chance?

Now the drive way is dug up and there's a big mud pit whenever it rains  
 
For those wondering why I care so much, I guess it's because we live in a nice area and most people take pride and put a lot of work into taking care of their homes and yards. It does look awful and it's frustrating to me. That's all. I'm not planning on calling by law on them, I was just curious because I've never seen people actually parking on the front lawn!

Years ago in Winnipeg, a guy near the Arena got tired of people blocking his driveway during Jets games. He even had signs up saying "do not block driveway". So one day he has enough and pushes a vehicle blocking his driveway with his own car and drives off to do whatever. Ends up getting charged by police for leaving the scene of an accident.  
 
When he gets his day on court, he tells the judge that he did not leave the scene of an accident: it was intentional.  
 
The judge accepted his explanation and threw out the charge.

Is this a bylaw? If it is your property why can''''t you do what you want with or on your property? Sometimes it doesn''''t feel like people have any freedom anymore because we have to accommodate so many people and they complain about everything these days. Not that I would park my vehicle on my lawn......but my statement applies to more in life than just lawn parking. where I live if your vehicle looks to old, no matter where you park it they will make you get rid of it. Park it in the paid for space.......sorry have to move it or it will be towed, park it on the street and someone in the neighbourhood is complaining so the city marks you're tires to try and get it out of there.......sorry still runs....and it isn't that old just too many snooty people in my neighbourhood that are shallow and worry about image too much.

and also having a neighbor that doesn't take care of their lawn (weed infested) can show what type of neighbor your going to have.

Really people. With all the crap that's happening in the world you are worrying about someone parking on their own lawn. FIRST WORLD PROBLEM

Why can't you do what you want on your own property? Because its illegal. Just like you can't grow pot in your yard or run a brothel. Being on your own property doesn't excuse illegal behavior.

we used our front lawn as a second driveway all winter with no problems from bylaw officers. There was no parking ban from mid Nov to Mid March on Princess. A BCPolice officer lives 3 doors down, never raised an issue over our parking on our lawn. Didn't ruin the lawn either .  
I looked through the bylaw pdf and didn't find anything specific to say that one cannot park a vehicle on their lawn. Derelict vehicles no, regular licensed vehicles.. I don't see the issue

Why do people/neighbours have to accommodate to those that choose to have a trashy looking yard. Yes it is your property but who in the hell likes looking at it. It makes a person look lazy and possibly a hoarder. Kinda gross.

If the vehicle is being used and doesn't sit for months on end and the yards kept up then a vehicle on the lawn isn't so bad. By-law prob wouldn't bother with that.

Do they not have a place to park on the street, driveway or in the back lane? Is it a derelict vehicle or a regular parking spot for them?  
 
I''d make a call to the City of Brandon to double check the by-laws. I wouldn''t be happy either if I had to look at that.  
 
Like one poster mentioned, it doesn't matter if one owns a property. There are certain standards in any and every neighbourhood that reasonable people will uphold. Property ownership must still comply with a certain standard to be considerate to neighbours. And this is the way property ownership is.
