I would hope that a bank is not so ignorant as to assume that "racial profiling" and /or an accent equates being a recent immigrant.  
 
There are limitations set on the account. RBC (like many other financial institutes) even has customized accounts for newcomers. For example, RBC's is called the RBC Newcomer Advantage™1.

I don't understand how or why anyone would think any of what she was asked to do was even remotely realistic. Sorry it happened but live and learn. It's not like this stuff isn't plastered all over the social media outlets to warn people. Same as cra scams and dating site scams.

Is RBC going to give me even more of a interrogation when I want to deposit/withdrawal??  
 
I tried to get a money order for less than 200 and had to answer soo many questions about how well I knew that company that I was sending money too. You don't care where I stick my debit card or cheque book ?  
 
They also do it on big cheques too, but the answer "so-and-so my family member died, this cheque is from their estate lawyer, No I haven't had one from there before, No I won't get another, and Sure hold it for 10 days I wasn't expecting it anyway"  
 
I'd rather they let me take the risk and stop asking me personal questions in the smallest town ever!

Scammers are the sleeze of the earth, but the blame should be on the victim.  
 
If people would stop and think, and not be on the look out for the easy way out, the scammers could not exist like this.  
 
I know there are billions of people on the earth, but the sad thing is even in the poorest countries people still have cell phones and data plans - I have seen many a documentary where a dirt poor family has a hut that is falling apart and not much food but the kids have cell phones (probably because they are that much cheaper to operate anywhere but Canada). Heck, even all that footage of the Syrian "refugees", most of them had the newest iPhones or something....  
 
So my question is how anyone in this day and age cannot have heard about these scams or knows someone who has been a victim. Doesn't matter in what language, everyone must have heard of most of these outrageous scams by now. We have to run out of gullible people one day.....

An attorney from Brandon/ surrounding area has agreed to represent the victim in a civil action against RBC in an attempt to recoup her $12,000.00 savings which RBC has seized. It will be both interesting and educating once ALL of the details come out in court, to find out who will ultimately be held accountable for the release of $19,000.00 on a fradulent cheque, how that cheque was cleared and released.  
RBC will have a lot of explaining to do.

since im one to want to do whatever i want with my money without hassle ( last i checked the bank is required to ask you questions on certain transactions but you have a legal right to decline to answer them) i do think its mostly the woman's fault she fell for this well known scam but i have had cases where a renter deposited money in the wrong account and RBC just went into the receiving account and took the cash back to redeposit into the right account, anyway i always wondered if they could do that why couldnt they pull the cash back from these fraudsters? and since this is sucj=h a large amount you would think a bank with the resources of that size would be better able to go after the real criminals

I hope the lawyer is doing it for free because if not, she's about to be screwed out of even more money. My sister is a financial lawyer in Toronto and we just talked about this last night. Sadly, as much as it sucks for your friend, she's SOL. The banks are protected up the ying yang against this kind of stuff and it won't go anywhere. Every single piece of paper you sign when you open a bank account tells you that you are responsible for every single transaction you do through your account. There's only 1 person accountable and that's your friend

will have a plethora of lawyers. I highly doubt this young lady will be successful, can you imagine if she is? People previously scammed will be lining up, then anyone scammed going forward will want their money back.

It will be interesting to see how a lawyer is planning to circumvent the policies of RBC regarding this matter. Their policies seem pretty clear and straight forward. It will also be interesting to see the legal fees at the end of this civil battle. Hopefully the account holder isn''t held responsible for RBC's legal expenses as well.

Having been active for a number of days I feel that this thread has gone past the point of being a discussion that could constructively evolve any further. With that in mind it will be closed to further reply unless further information comes to light that would serve as additional basis for discussion.
