Does anyone know who has the large metal trap at the corner of 8th and Richmond ave ? l assume it is some kind of turkey trap ? it has been there for about a week and we haven’t seen anyone around it ? but someone must be feeding them there.the turkeys seem to come and go from the trap,but the other day we were out for a walk with our dog and a turkey had its head caught in the cage,no one around so we went over and help it get it head free.With them putting out all that feed,it has now attracted about 10 deer that come to the food.The deer are also eating everyones shrubs in their yards.Not sure how the one made out with their head stuck in the cage,but l see one has a broken leg now,which l assume is from getting caught in the cage.  
We live about a block east of this cage setup and if whoever is doing this,please get your act together and get the turkeys and clean that mess before we have even more deer coming into town,not to mention,rats,mice etc !!  
 
Last year The Brandon Wildlife tried netting them and it was a gong show,they trapped about 6,but killed 3 in the process....  
We are not sure who to contact about getting this mess cleaned up ?  
l was told last year they relocate this turkeys for hunting,Poor turkeys are tame,wouldn’t take much of a hunter to shoot them..  
Some people have hand fed them ..

I know of someone that's been charged for injuring a turkey. They'll take it seriously.  
 
Farmers that have experience raising turkeys can safely catch and transport them.

Pretty sure it's also against the law to feed wild animals in town.

It is illegal to feed wildlife within city limits. We can't expect Brandon residents to follow the law when the City of Brandon is well aware of, and yet allows feeding wildlife on Hanbury Hill. I would think that MB Conservation would frown on this neglect.  
 
I enjoy watching wildlife but outside city limits. People aren't doing wildlife any favours but feeding them within the city.  
 
I hope Animal Control does something with this turkey trap so the birds aren't getting stuck/injured in it. 8th & Richmond is a busy place. I hope ACO isn't waiting for the complaint-driven system to kick in.

A neighbour Called animal control ,not sure what they are doing? We saw 2 young kids around the trap today around lunch,hopefully some child doesn’t hurt or caught in this trap,warm out now,but can’t imagine being caught in it when it –30 outside !!  
l guess the city will wait till someone get hurt...then who’s at fault ?

If anyone wants to watch them trap turkeys this morning(now) they are doing it at corner of 8th and Richmond ..

Whoever was in charge of capturing the turkeys ,they forgot one. Now it is all alone no companions and very lonely. I don't want to hear any excuses. If you are going to capture them make sure you capture all or leave 2 behind.  
Sorry my rant for the day. But I cannot imagine how that poor bird feels.

Maybe contact the Brandon Sun or the humane society to find out who’s behind all this ? l heard it was the Brandon Wildlife Assc moving them for hunting ...  
l also heard one of the buys who fed them everyday lives at the 4 plex on 8th street just north of the trap,you could ask him about it...

It doesn't matter who is involved, one is left behind and very lonely. At least bring one back so it has company. How would the people involved like to have their family removed from them and be lecture all alone. If they are put out in the country for hunting , that is so cruel. I could see removing but hunting so sad. I thought wild life association was suppose to help protect the animals not the hunters. But what do I know I am just a city girl who enjoys watching nature in the city.

Who do you think reintroduced the birds back into the wild in manitoba? I will give you a hint it was hunters. The only reason they did it was to build a population large enough to support hunting. Nice city people like you do not go out and raise wildlife just to look at because that would cost you time effort and money

They are good to eathe. They have been pasturing on chemically treated lawns. Ask anyone who eats wild meat why they would not eat anything that I in the city. Because they are not feeding on natural food sources. So putting them out in the country for hunting ting is ridiculous. Now too put them in the country to rehome is a different story. I just feel sad or the one left behind. No matter what it is horrible.

How many turkeys were caught? There were well over a dozen in the south end.

l heard the guy across the backlane video taped the whole capture,some birds went through hell he said.he also has video of deer in the trap..  
Just hope they get it out of there before some kids get hurt playing around or on it,or even worse,a dog gets caught in it..

They wouldn't be letting the turkeys loose in the wild for the purpose of hunting. They are relocating them into the wild because that is their natural habitat hence the name 'wild turkeys'.

If those birds went through hell and deer were trapped.I hope the person who video taped the capture would step forward and do something so this does not happen again.  
With the complaints about the dog movie where the dog was treated in humanely, how about these poor birds and deer. And the one that was left all alone.

Interesting sentence!  
-You heard a rumour the guy across the street video taped the whole capture, but it reads as if you can't confirm it.  
- the same guy that might of video taped it also told you the birds went through hell?  
- and you know he has a video of the trapped deer.  
 
You have made lots of accusations, but I'm not seeing you provide any real proof to back up your posts.

I live in the area. And I just feel bad for these birds. They are joy to watch and I happily throw some seed out for them whenever they are out. Sad that they are gone now

Sorry I live in the south end and I am glad they are gone! I'm glad I don't have to clean poop off my vehicle, fence, and driveway. Glad thy will no longer be a hazard when they cross Richmond And back up traffic. Glad they will no longer chase cats and scare children. They are wild turkeys and that is where they belong in the wild!

Be wild turkeys, until someone fed them, and they kept coming back, and they were very territorial, I've seen them chase people walking their dog past them, they are not tame they are wild at heart, glad that they were trapped and relocated far away from the feeding hands of Brandon where they can live a prosperous life, fending for them selves and filling freezers

so you're saying the turkeys came back? Must be the good feed they are getting in town?

I do not like that the Brandon Wildlife is allowed to do the trapping. I would rather see Manitoba Conservation along with the Brandon Wildlife or a Turkey Federation do it.  
 
 
 
I am fortunate to be able to watch these turkeys grow up from little ones to mature adults. They cross thru passed my apartment on a daily basis. Feed on the frozen fruit in the trees throughout the winter.  
 
Then along comes the Brandon Wildlife Assn to trap them in the dead of winter. Removing them from the food sources they know are available to them. Where are they set free in the wild? They are moved into an area that they are NOT familiar with.  
 
How many do not survive the stress of the trapping and the move to a new area?  
 
I think it is not out of line for those of us who enjoy watching them throughout the yea,r know that they are handled with the birds best interest in mind. I was fortunate one day to come home and watch 2 females fighting and get it on video. Something I would probably have never seen in my lifetime.  
 
In regards to Mb Conservation supervising, how can they when the MB Government has decimated the boots on the ground staff in this province. Now law breaking poachers are getting the upper hand. Pretty hard to do when if memory serves me right the only officers are in Boissevaine, Virden, Carberry, Neepawa, and Shoal Lake. 2 members at that per...........

where did they take them? To the wild, I would presume. How will they find a food source on the ground when the ground is snow covered?  
 
Just like they say the deer population will go down, as they can't get to food for the amount of snow covering their food source.

read it again,guy across the BACKLANE video taped it. No rumors,he told us.Never said he video taped the deer CAUGHT in the trap,the deer could come and go as the door was left open,that is when he taped them.He told us the birds went through hell,but we saw the whole thing from start to finish.  
No accusations, no rumors, all true.2 people video taped it, and one guy took photos.. Someone posted photos on facebook.  
The turkeys were hatched in people’s yards, didn’t come in from the wild.  
The problem on Richmond was not the turkeys, but the stupid drivers, if you just kept on driving, they would get out of the way no problem, but people would sit in their car and honk the horn at them thinking the turkeys knew what it was for, lol..  
 
A metis friend of ours shot six out by Rivers that they moved out there and he said they tasted like S___T...PS,Don’t blame me for the hunting laws.  
The turkeys you saw out by 110 were Not the same turkeys they trapped, the turkeys they trapped were taken out by Rivers, We were told, sorry, no proof, lol..  
We saw around 70(lost count) just south of 110 on Jan 1 st..  
But don’t worry turkey friends, they missed one that is hanging around the trap, and 4 of them were outside the trap when it went off(saw on video) and we saw them last night perched in a tree south of Richmond !!!!  
SO,keep feeding them and we’ll build the flock back up for them to trap and shoot next year !! lol..  
Now we gotta do something about those 15 deer that are hanging around that cage...  
You bitch about turkeys on Richmond, wait till you hit a deer ..hopefully no one gets hurt...

CO here, but I do agree there are not enough of them, which is unfortunate.  
 
As far as the turkeys go not being able to find food, well here it is all wild animals are born with something called instinct, of which to find food, find a mate, and survive. And yeah depending on where the animal is in the food chain would essentially determine its quality of life : Prey. Vs predator, but let's look at what happens when people feed wildlife, # 1 that animal becomes dependent on man for food ( and I'm not talking about foraging under the tree for berries) and than lose the ability to find the food on there own, and now we have a situation where people have been feeding them cause " they feel sorry" for animals that are engineered to be in the wild and fend for themselves, when in the grand picture have just given the animal a death sentence, whether it is a dangerous animal that gets shot for coming to scavenge, or a turkey that is used to being fed, and can't remember or figure out how to get food for itself. So at the end of the day, I wouldn't really say it's MWF's fault completely, and my challenge for everyone would be " if you can do it better than go ahead and try" the birds will be fine.
