What's your thought.During my travels I see a lot of towns and cities with some very nice signs welcoming people on the highway as you approach the town. Some are quite nice and always say welcome.
What do we have? An artistic idea of a wheat stalk with the name brandon. Not even a welcome. Sure these signs are expensive and we have five of them.
Do you think we could have done better than an artistic idea of a wheat husk

has been put aside by the city to purchase new signs. I don`t like the ones we have now, with the `artistic slant on a family`. Plus the signs don`t even say welcome. And apparently the highway signs aren`t illuminated, who the heck placed that order? lol

I still like the wheat sign with the harvest moon design, I think there are some flags down at city hall with this design.

Every time I see a city vehicle with that hideous `artistic family` I shudder....

I always thought they should put BRANDON in big letters on the hill going up 18th above Walmart like the Hollywood sign in Hollywierd.

I agree with you totally. Doesn't say welcome, population, or anything and you have to look hard too see the wheat stock, and there is more to Brandon than wheat also. The walking trails, bike trails, Wheat Kings, winter fair, Discovery Centre - some of these things could have been incorporated into a great "Welcome to Brandon" sign. Some of the smaller towns I've been to have great signs - Holland and Pinawa were 2 I just saw this past weekend.

the city put money aside to replace the signs on the outskirts of Brandon. I'm sure that they would be open to suggestions as to what the residents would like to see on the welcome signs.

Personally I like the flags that are hung outside of city hall consisting of a wheat sheaf with a harvest moon behind.

I read that the maybe some people see wheat while others see family. The linking D & O are meant to symbolize a sense of belonging.

Personally, I get nothing like that from the signs but all I see are a few lines and dots.

I may be wrong but I think the money that was put away was spent on the existing signs. At the time I defended the amount budgeted (I dont recall how much they were, but it was alot). I assumed wrongly that we were going to get some nice signs with illumination and landscaping, but we instead got the ugly metal signs that you hardly notice.

Again I'm not positive but I think those stupid ugly signs are another lasting gift from SDH's term as mayor. Thanks.

I think the city can use the money somewhere more useful and beneficial than worrying about a stupid welcome sign. If you have a problem with the current one (yeah it's not great) than fork out the money, plans and materials and have it redone yourself then present it to the city as a donation!
There are just way more issues that need to be addressed that cost more money than some signs

Not true, I've always thought that the Regina sign was nice.

Depends how you do it. Of course the top of the sign needs to say:

Brandon
Where the Great Plains Begin.

It should also say the population, many people don't realize Brandon's size...

Population: Over 48,000

Remember, from the Trans-Canada Highway many people would think that Brandon is smaller than Virden, because most of the city is hidden in the valley. A well executed sign is cheap marketing that can pay for itself. Being right on the 100th Meridian gives the city a natural slogan that some of us have been suggesting for almost a decade now.
