It's an annual event...

I hear this every summer. Someone comes into town from another community and goes "shopping for bikes" after midnight with a truck and a pair of bolt cutters. I knew of a person who grew up on a First Nation community and she said it was common practice for one or two family members to "shop" for the others. Bikes, barbecues, outdoor yard toys and whatever that could amuse their kids, nieces and nephews. I knew someone who lost an trampoline a few summers ago. She'd justified the action, by saying the TV shows/commercials would fill their kids heads with high hopes of wanting that stuff that the adults feel obligated to go get it. A sort of "Robin hood" mentality of it all. And with a town like Brandon, it was easy pickings. Sometimes the stuff would be just sitting there out in the open. Granted, Superdads bikes were chained down. But, if it stills sits out and can be seen... no lock will stop it from disappearing if these folks want it bad enough.
It's sad and makes me bitter to think that this kind of attitude has been going on now for generations. To just help yourself to someone else's stuff and give it to children. What kind of lesson is that? A twisted version of "share and share alike"? ...Although, they aren't really sharing our stuff with us, but just among themselves. LOL
I hate doing it, but every night I bring in everything into our garage and lock both the front and back gates. My rule of thumb is... "If hey don't see it or too much work to haul it over the fence... I stays ours"
Just my opinion, I could be wrong. -- Happy Canada Day --
