Has anyone done it do they come check you fridge see if you qualify or what do they do???

We did it. You just phone (or maybe you can do it online too now I''m not sure), they will give you a date (really far away in the future, or at least ours was...then we forgot so had to rebook). They pick it up (I think you can just leave it outside for them to get) and then will mail you the cheque. I know it''s personal residence only, not rental properties or cabin areas.

A friend of ours did it over two years ago and it sat there, beside their house for months before they came around to pick it up. What I did was listed our fridge for $60.00 on eBrandon and it was gone the next day. Done, no waiting and up and extra $10.00! I know it doesn't save the whales, but... My theory is that I didn't replace that fridge and therefore saved myself that wasted hydro. And for the guy who bought that so called "inefficient appliance", yes, he may waste energy in having that... However, by not purchasing a new one may have lessened the carbon footprint in manufacturing something that's simply replacing basically the same thing with the exact purpose. Not only that we just saved the wasted energy and lessened the carbon footprint of dismantling and recycling a perfectly working appliance. I think it's a win, win. I save money while making some from selling something unwanted, while the buyer gets a good deal and to re-purpose rather than recycling and prevent the unnecessary waste of energy and material of building more.

We as well got a new fridge/and stove.  
Sold the stove on eBrandon. Called hydro spoke to a lady that should of retired. She was a -- I should of spoke with her manager. Anyhow hydro couldn't give me a date or time AND they needed to see/hear it running. I said I didn't have room in the garage to store it etc. Money given Leon's for removal.

fridge put outside should have the door removed to keep kids from getting trapped inside and suffocated, used to happen fairly regularily , believe that it is now the law to remove door.

Sell on eBrandon if you can. Hydro takes months to come and yes needs it plugged in and running when picking up

The old, old fridges with the "latch" doors could not be opened from the inside and those do need the door removed if they sit outside. Not sure that is required with the newer kind that just push closed and can be opend with a push from inside? The suffocation cases were with the latched doors.  
 
And yes, Hydro rules clearly state fridge must be running and cooling at time of pick up.

Had awesome service with hydro in Winnipeg when I called to get old freezer pick up. Was undecided when I would be working so after talking and checking, went online and filled out info...(much easier) They will not pick up if it has sat outside in minus 40 for some reason, but ours was n garage so no problems. They gave us a date for Brandon pick up and it was only 3 weeks later. Also they don't take really small freezers as she did ask size when I originally called...  
Our cheque arrived last week so about 2-3 weeks after.

if the fridge is from the 60's or earlier maybe, There hasn't been latching fridges for 40 years
