Anyone know what has happened on hwy 1 and #16? Traffic was at a stand still and being rerouted onto #16 as of 10 pm tonight/SUNDAY

I noticed MB Roads is saying the westbound lanes of Highway #1 at that intersection are closed due to a MVC. There was one there last night also.

Did they let traffic take turns on other side of highway been sitting here awhile now

So that makes 3 fatal accidents with semis at the same location all during the last 2 weeks of August. I'm not saying to jump to conclusions about the traffic lights but I just thought it was interesting. My deepest sympathies to everyone that experienced these accidents, as well as the families of the deceased. May they find peace and comfort.

Are there lights at that intersection?

There are lights. However they change fast... and the speed limit is 80. I find that people are driving through there at 100 or more still (I am in no way saying that is he cause of any of these accidents). It goes from 110, to 100 to 80 within 5 kms. And honestly, by the other side of the lights people are doing 110 plus again.

I think one problem is people turning at that intersection. Last time I went through there I didn't see a green arrow- just the green light to go when traffic clears. I have seen a few close calls there and been in an accident there myself when someone rear ended us in the winter because they didn't slow down when the yellow lights were flashing.

that there has been so many accidents in a short time frame at this intersection with the loss of life.  
 
We were right there before the emergency vehicles arrived. I could not have imagined witnessing the accident. A semi hauling pipe hitting a car. It is burned into my head seeing the RCMP who were first on site trying to get those in the car out. Then seeing CPR being performed......and a white sheet pulled over.....  
 
I give those emergency personal KUDOS for what they have to go thru when a tragedy like this strikes.  
 
Whatever happened has happened. We need to figure out why it happened and what the solution to the problem may be. Forensics along with witnesses will be able to put the puzzle together.  
 
What I will say is traffic from Kenora to Winnipeg was laden with idiot drivers in a RUSH to get home. Single lane highway between Kenora and Falcon lake with people passing on solid lines. THERE IS NO PLACE TO GO if something happens. Rock faces on both sides of the highway.  
 
We as civilized people need to realize that no final destination, function, text or call is worth the loss of a life.  
 
We have to many people dying these days on our roadways.  
 
Finally my thoughts go out to the driver of the truck and the families of those who lost there lives in this tragic accident......

an overpass and a cloverleaf. And if the last 2 weeks are not proof nothing is! In the meantime 2 cruisers need to be there for a complete shift to stop people from flying through the 80km zone at 110!!!

Gary Doer from the NDP promised an overpass there about fifteen years back? They got as far as putting in survey stakes all around there. For years I drove by and wondered when Highways was going to start. Time went by and eventually the stakes fell over. Ever since the speed increase, too many drivers blast through over 110km/hr. It's time to honor that promise.

Sounds like the semi blew through the red light. A stupid decision cost two young people their lives.

do you have a link to a more detailed news report? From the article posted above i don't see reference to which vehicle ran a red light? Obviously one vehicle should not have been in the intersection but there is no indication of which one that was.

tired and got tunnel vision and totally missed the light. Wonder what the log book said. Wonder if the truck check @ Headingley was open last night? Not likely being Sunday. Trying to get as many driving hours in as possible before Monday and was not an alert driver. That is why rules are in place to make sure drivers are alert. The only other explanation is trying to make the light doing excessive speed and did not have the time to stop the heavy load when the car turned out in front. It was dusk and it can sometimes be hard to judge the speed of oncoming traffic at twilight. Feel very sorry for the 2 families.

right but you what the general public will begin to complain about????  
 
Do they not have criminals to catch?  
 
Well when we speed we break the laws. When we drive without a seat belt we break the laws. When we talk and or text we break the laws.  
 
if and when we get caught, we should not gripe about it as the law enforcement people are trying to enforce the laws which would mean less deaths on our highways.  
 
We need to slow down and turn our cells off and put them away when we drive....

I traveled # 1 a few weeks ago to Winnipeg. I was going 117 km/hr, semi's were blowing by me like i was standing still. One in particular had to be going 140. Then on they way home, I slowed down to in the 80 zone, again a semi was coming up behind me in the right lane and saw I was slowing down and pulled out to pass me in the left lane and went flying through the lights. I really don't understand the speed some of these semi's are traveling at. At 140, there is no hope for them to stop.

Gets worse in the winter. It seems in the last 10 years there are a lot of people that are not used to Canadian winters driving on the highway with semi trucks. I have been travelling in and out of Winnipeg for 30+ years on a regular basis and the last 10 have been horrific for semi accident. I don't know if it's the training or the inexperience but something is definitely lacking. In the last case the semi driver blew right through a red light. You can't blame road conditions for that. So tragic for the families and the young lives lost

As a former semi driver I think people need to understand and remember that if you turn out in front of an 18 wheeler, you are gonna loose. Keep in mind that even if a semi driver hits the brakes, it isn't going to stop for at least half a block due to the weight of the cargo be carried shifting forward. There is not enough time from the time the lights turn to allow a semi to stop at that intersection, even when doing the 80kms. Most semis cannot go over 100/110 do to them having a govenor built into the engine. Four wheelers need to respect an 18 wheeler cause you are gonna loose every time. My condolences to the families affected.

Lookandlearn just mentioned the problem. You will lose against a semi every time. The biggest problem is that semi drivers know that. They won't be hurt so why be careful?  
The intersection of the mentioned accident has flashing warning lights...before yellow, before red. You can easily see these lights from a distance. The speed limit heading west is 100km between the 16 and Portage, then goes to 80km before the lights.  
Like I mentioned there are also flashing lights that warn you the light is turning yellow, then red.  
Absolutely no reason for blowing a Red at that location or anywhere else for that matter.

with criminal negligence causing death so it is not a case of momentum. There is time to slow there if the speed limits, traffic lights and warnings are followed.

I think there also needs to be more speed limit signs on the number one. There's plenty of speed changes and only a handful of signs. People from out of province may not be as inclined as the locals to know the route like we do. Having more speed limits signs could definitely make a difference.

Make the penalties severe. 15 years in the tank at least. Plus if you get caught speeding through a red light, even with no injuries, should be jail time.

The Trans. Canada in Manitoba is a joke with having at grade intersections and using traffic lights instead of overpasses. The reduced speed limits is just a band aide that's not working very well. I'm not even sure that increasing the speed limit on the Trans. Canada to 110 km per hour accomplished anything.  
 
Its been established that The Manitoba Highways like taking shortcuts and for the most part, they don't work well. eg. passing lanes on Highway 10 north of Brandon don't work very well. It should really be twinned. Most of the new resurfacing projects, they don't pave the shoulders all in the name of trying to save a few $. They dropped the ball by not twinning Vic. Ave West from Birchwood Nissan to Governers Road.  
 
One can make a solid case that the Yellowhead Highway should be twinned from atleast at the junction of Highway 83 to Russell.  
 
Having said that, people need to respect the speed limit which is for perfect highway and weather conditions not when the highway is a skating rink!

Penalties do need to be higher but not 15 years. Photo radar might help. Also it would be nice if everyone gave themselves extra time to travel and trucking companies need to take the pressure off drivers to make deadlines.

As much as adding an overpass and more signage would help the main issue is the driver. They need to ensure they are following the signs and paying attention! Just the other day a semi blew right through a red light at the junction of 1 and 10. He realized he wasn't going to stop and honked his horn the whole way through. Luckily everyone on the green light sat and waited for him to go through. It was very scary to think what could have happened at the speed he was going. These truckers need to be stopped more often, their log books checked more often and the companies need to pay attention to who they are hiring.

The semi ran a red light and killed two people and its the cars fault for not yielding to a semi who cant slow down quick enough? Right...  
 
As for the Saturday accident, it was actually about 5km east of the intersection. Guy was lying down in the ditch and ran in front of a semi when he got the chance. Nothing anyone could do there. Guy was going to end it either way.

The car driver is not at fault for not yielding to the semi-but yet that car driver is dead because she did not do that very thing. Very sad.  
 
Please people-as drivers we owe it to ourselves and our families to try and keep ourselves safe. So, when you have the right of way please make sure it is safe for you to proceed before you pull out to cross that highway. Oncoming traffic-are they slowing down enough to be able to stop without entering your path? If they are coming fast-wait to make sure they do stop. there is no point dying even if you are in the right. Crossing a 4 lane highway? look both ways for each set of lanes. There could be a car coming the wrong way-and better to stop for the guy in the wrong than to have him kill or injure you. Keep yourself safe in spite of what anyone else does wrong.

This problem intersection should maybe have its 80km/h zone extended and have high visibility photo radar. This could assist in saving lives, and cultivate a little extra money for the province from those who tend to disregard the speed zones! It's incredibly tragic to hear about the lives lost on the highways, and not all have to do with speed - some are bad judgement, being tired, etc... but photo radar sure wouldn't hurt.
