Wow! I am getting really worried about this crosswalk. I use this intersection daily and it is unbelievable how many people do not stop for the pedestrians when the lights are going. I am very worried about the kids that cross the street there. I know Meadows school tells the kids always to push the button and wait for the cars to stop but the kids do not always listen. Please be aware of the kids in our city, pay attention to your surroundings. Have a great day everyone and look around for kids.

Agreed, as a pedestrian it's full on defensive mode at this crossing, even with the crosswalk button pressed. Isn't a walk in the park as a driver either coming off of 22nd from either direction and wanting to turn left. I'm hesitant to blindly suggest lights at every single intersection but would be interested to hear plusses and minuses of having them here, look at what effect they might have on traffic flow and what improvements they could have for safety of both pedestrians and drivers.
Not to make this thread into too much more than you intended, but to me this is part of a bigger picture..... the whole area near the mall (which i'd define as anywhere from the East side of 18th to about 22nd St) would benefit from a full re-examine from the perspective of optimizing for pedestrians. I imagine everything was conceived before the density of housing that's evolved over the years. Problem is you have some areas that are Provincial, some that are city and some private and everyone has to work together.

I can't believe that Meadows doesn't have patrols at that corner. Back in the 80s when I went there, they did and it was only a K-6 school. Now it is a K-8 school, perhaps Grade Eights could do it.

I was looking at the Manitoba Education site earlier today, and there is a high school credit for community service. Perhaps grade 8 students could be offered a Manitoba Grade 9 half credit for doing a year of patrolling on such a busy street... give them an extra half credit toward high school.

Even the ones with lights aren't effective. They work only as good as the driver paying attention. Numerous close calls and far too many fatalities. A couple overpass crosswalks are desperately needed!

As much as I agree drivers should pay attention, all people of all ages who cross at a pedestrian crossing need to know to the button. You can't just walk out into the intersection, period. I see this far too often all the time on 6th st. by New Era School. If you are a cyclist, you are to walk your bike across the pedrestian crossing. Maybe a bit more police prescence ensuring both drivers and pedestrain behave themselves is in order.
