Can anyone provide any insight?

BPS is on scene of a serious accident on Kirkaldy Dr. Kirkaldy Dr. is closed from Fraser Cr to Patterson Cr until further notice.

Was it a vehicle accident? Any details?

I can’t post the fb link from my phone but BDNMB’s fb page shows it’s a 3 vehicle accident. Someone posted pictures of it. It doesn’t look pretty at all.

According to CBC, 8 people were injured, 1 serious and airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg. Hopefully everyone makes a full recovery.

The local news paper is reporting that 6 people one of which is a 5 year old child. Regardless of the actual amount, it is completely senseless and was unavoidable if someone just didn’t get behind the wheel. Drugs, alcohol and speed are all factors in the crash and charges are pending against a 27 year old driver.

Brandon Sun and CBC also have 2 different times listed for when the Accident occurred so one of the news outlets obviously doesn’t have all the correct information

If people stop driving like idiots, there would less people needing to go to the hospital, just saying the obvious.

hit the nail on the head...the driver that caused said accident should go to jail. Period.

The driver causing the accident was the one seriously injured and not one of the innocent people.

Simple economics trauma specialist will go where they can make the most money get the most experience, bigger the city more difficult cases more experience increasing their value and prestige , 40 thousand vs 700 thousand no comparison more people more accidents emergency's more dollars.

Health Sciences Centre is THE trauma centre for Manitoba: most if not all serious trauma cases in the province will end up there if warranted (per MLA Reg Helwer at last week’s town hall meeting here in Brandon). HSC has all the specialists required to deal with these serious injuries.

shooting in Las Vegas, there's only one Level 1 Trauma Center in all of Nevada. And that's UMC in Las Vegas. The Health Science Centre in Winnipeg would be the same. HSC also has a helipad onsite now so STARS can go directly there instead of landing at the airport, unloading

I think alcohol and speed would be more of an issue than marijuana.

'drugs involved' doesn't necessarily mean it was marijuana. could be people abusing pres:cription drugs too

What makes you think that the people who have been responsibly avoiding marijuana use until it's legal are going to start smoking and driving?

On another thread about the government's efforts to close the loopholes that lawyers use to get drunk drivers off many commenters were saying civil liberties were disappearing and stopping drunk driving wasn't worth giving up our freedoms. I guess they're all out buying bump stocks for their hunting rifles.

First of all, if this guy was drunk and high/stoned, then he should get the book thrown at him. Add excessive speed too if that was the case.  
 
Every pot smoker that I've talked to seems to have the opinion that marijuana can do no wrong and that only alcohol causes accidental death. Yeah, they can all drive just fine after smoking up, according to them. I know from personal experience that if you're high enough, it does affect your ability to drive. That said, does anybody actually believe that those who have been smoking up for years haven't been driving after smoking all of those years already? Come on, people have been toking and driving since the sixties. It's ridiculous to believe that all of a sudden, after pot is legalized, that all of the pot smokers will suddenly start driving after smoking up. Now, all of a sudden, governments feel the need to do something about it. What a pile of you know what!  
 
No. It is not worth losing our civil liberties and the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, not to mention all of our other basic freedoms just so the general public can feel safer.

Is there proof to your claims? It was estimated he was going over 100km/hr. I know a lot more about this accident than I will be willing to share on this thread, and it is drugs on the other end of the spectrum that pose a bigger risk to society, pills included. I could copy and paste tons of results from the internet and even our own government studies showing that yes users showed mild impairment but not enough to be dangerously unsafe.

One even claimed that he was a better driver when high. I don't do drugs so don't know, but according to a few posters here the driver that caused the accident didn't cause it because they were high on marijuana. Pretty vague statement coming from someone who says they don't use drugs so.....you are correct that you do not know and should maybe just keep it that way. Maybe do a little research on the topic of marijuana before you go and spew garbage like that.  
 
To attack Brenda like that is just plain cowardish and immature. Studies have proven that alcohol and more serious drugs pose a greater driving risk than marijuana, and that is what Brenda was pointing out, hence the accident. I am not defending so called "stoners" or "potheads" but I find it pretty funny people label these people as such because there are people from lawyers, police, doctors, high members of society that use marijuana. Next time you see a soldier make sure to call them a pothead or stoner from suffering PSTD and other ailments and such. Should I assume all you others drink so should be labeled just a bunch of drunks?

Kirkaldy Drive is a disaster at the best of times. West bound traffic driving over the line all the time to avoid park cars. Pedestrians (with kids & pets) darting across anywhere and everywhere which is challenging for vehicles especially in poor weather.  
 
I realize the most important thing in this situation is human life and I hope the innocent people are doing ok.  
 
What I would like to know is what is the cost of this accident to the tax payer? Will the driver of the Pontiac have to pay for any of the emergency services, vehicle loss or personal losses? I don't know how this all works but it's high time (no pun intended) people started paying for the damage they cause & not put the burden on the rest of us.  
 
My autopac shouldn't go up (MPI is already asking for an increase!) because some moron drives under the influence and causes a disaster.  
 
Why should my taxes go toward paying for this idiot's actions? I wish someone would tally up the cost of this "accident" from start to end and let me know what my portion is so I can make a few calls and write a few emails. I'm tired of footing the bill for idiots who drink (etc) and drive.  
 
The person needs to be held accountable for their actions and this includes monetarily.

suggesting that speed and alcohol would have been more of a factor in this accident, if he was only using marijuana. (Other drugs were not mentioned in the post I was quoting from.)

Having discussed topic this at length, the consensus is that chronic MJ users (non-medicinal) use it just to function normally.  
 
Like I have a cup of coffee in the morning to get going, chronics spark up a doobie to start their day. I drive on caffeine. They drive on pot and think nothing of it.  
 
I don't care what other people do, just don't be all screwed up on the roads where I am!

It was hard to crack a calming smile at the confused little boy . He was covered in dried blood and darkening bruises when I saw him a few hours after the accident in the trauma room the other night.  
 
He was lucky. He was in shock but stable and was discharged with a head wound stapled and stitched but without any broken bones. It certainly could have been worse. A lot worse.  
 
I don't know the details of the accident beyond what has been released by the police or speculated here and in the media.. but it does make me wonder.. if alcohol, drugs and speed contributed then how much more of any of these factors could have turned a terrible situation into a real tragedy? Were the factors fatal enough and everyone just lucked-out?: Its scary to think that luck (or whatever power you might believe in) might have been a significant factor in avoiding a tragic outcome.  
 
Its hard to see any kid dealing with pain. For a small guy - he's a really tough kid. He puts on a brave face but its not hard to see through to the physical and emotional toll this is taking on him. He's missing school and his friends.  
 
His mom is a single parent with two other children and they are now without a vehicle until that can be resolved. As anyone can imagine, it makes everything harder. She's off-work now taking care of him, her daughter (also in the accident) and dealing with painful bruising that runs from their ankles to their neck and shoulders.  
 
She is strong and an incredible mom and they are all talented and clever kids.They are a proud and loving family. They have worked very hard for everything they have and its certainly hard to see them take a set-back like this.  
 
No one deserves to have to go through what they are. I hope everyone else involved in the accident is making a recovery too. I can't help but wonder.. if this was at all avoidable.. how lucky are the rest of the kids in our community?

It's not that pot doesn't impair a person's driving skill, all pot users will eventually reach a level that they shouldn't be driving.  
The question is at what level the law says is to high to drive. Many habitually high people have a higher tolerance than occasional users.  
 
I personally believe when they said below .08 was OK to drive, they made a mistake. I think that was the same as saying it's OK to drink and drive. Imagine how many lives would have been saved if they said 0.00 was the legal limit.  
 
No amount of impairment is OK when you go to work, why then is it OK to be slightly impaired to drive. This goes for all drugs including alcohol.  
 
I say pick your drug of choice and don't drive.
