Altercation at Town Centre

Four people in custody after an assault in the middle of the afternoon. A knife and crowbar were seen during the altercation.

Seems things are worse and worse every day, and never a day goes by anymore without some kind of story like this.

Drug cartel shot some guy right outside our resort in Mexico. Probably not even 500 feet from my room. Heard the shots and everything.

So then we should just what, keep ignoring the crap that's continually getting worse in the city? This type of oh well it could be worse attitude is why this city's going to the pooper. Too many keyboard hero's yet barely anyone will help in the real world.
No one helps anyone anymore even little old ladies that fall down get looked at and watched but not helped up. Fights about to begin and no one tries to de escalate it, just walk past shaking their heads. Make a call, stop and help, pull heads out of the sand and stop just accepting crappy behaviour.

If I seen people arguing and holding a crowbar or knife I'd get the hell out of the way! Obviously the creeps knew each other, I doubt it was a random attack! How do you know the people walking by didn't call the cops?

I can't see anyone walking past a little old lady that fell and not lend a hand.
People were damn good helping my Dad when he fell.

Over the last year at this location it is getting worse. Assaults, drugs, used needles, empty alcohol containers...you name it you will find it there in and out of the building on any day at any time. Often in the middle of the day. Sad when you have BPS and security on speed dial....

The Town Centre does not feel like a safe place anymore - always seems to have shady-ish people hanging around. Fewer and fewer stores/businesses over the years. I try to be aware of my surroundings at most times but especially there.

Let me guess. You must be part of the Bear Clan patrol group right? Since you are wanting to do something about it you are out patrolling our streets and recruiting others to make a difference....or are you here bashing people like me being another keyboard hero such as you are doing? I have said over and over we should be having cadets like Winnipeg patrolling our downtown, traffic lights out, etc. Our city cannot afford 6 figure officers walking the streets but we could afford a busload of cadets for the same price. We need to make a presence downtown without spending tons of money doing it. But hey what do I know, I'm only a keyboard hero that helps little ladies by holding the doors, shoveling peoples driveways that are too elderly to do so, purchase magazines and candy bars to local kids to support their sports teams to keep them busy and active, but hey....guess that isn't enough for people like you. I wish I could be as active in taking down assaults and people with weapons like you are. You must be Superman!!

Not saying that crime, sometimes serious, doesnt happen. Not for a second saying that what we're reading about in this discussion isn't an awful thing to read about taking place in this city or that every reasonable effort shouldn't be made to reduce.... but my instinct is to not automatically jump to the "things are getting worse" conclusion when there is a serious crime.

To look further I go to BPS' most recent crime stats......for this year through September:

Crimes Against Person, which is what it seems we're talking about here, were down year-on-year by 2%.

Stats through the same time the year before that had Crimes Against Person down 3% year-on-year:

Of course if one wants to talk Crimes Against Property, Controlled Drug or Traffic it appears to be a different story.... but even then, simply looking at percentages might not tell the whole story since its possible that there were increases in enforcement efforts in at least the latter two areas. Not advocating a "head in the sand" approach, but also not advocating panic and worry for reduced safety without good hard data to back it.

Because of our cell phone, internet and the ability to quickly get a message out there, it could cause the reason we are seeing an increase in crime in town. In the past we did not have this amount of access. I believe we as a town we are more aware which is good but yeah is does bring a allusion that there is a increase in crime.

Past/though the Town Centre several days a week, go there for coffee sometimes, and I do not feel unsafe - not during the day. After dark, Well, i don't walk anywhere in town after dark. If I came upon a disagreement, no I would not interfere and especially not when any sort of weapons are being brandished. If I come across a little old lady that has fallen I most certainly do go and help her-the 2 situations are quite defferent.

My grandson is Batman, and apparently I'm Spider-Man. I think if Superman was in town, we'd know.

If I seen people arguing and holding a crowbar or knife I'd get the hell out of the way! Obviously the creeps knew each other, I doubt it was a random attack! How do you know the people walking by didn't call the cops?

I can't see anyone walking past a little old lady that fell and not lend a hand.
People were damn good helping my Dad when he fell. "

Sorry to burst your happy bubble but it happens way too often and seen it numerous times ...glad your dad was helped though, that's nice to hear.some people are too self absorbed I guess to care about others. I wouldn't know the reason as I could never do it. But what I can tell you is last tues at about 1230 at the cross to the buses on rosser, I little woman about 65/70 slid off the ramp part of the side walk flat on her rump. 5 men...yes 5 grown assed men stood there and watched her go down ( we were at the light in our car) my son got out and helped her and I blkd the traffic as she was partially in the roadway. Not only did no one else attempt to help cars actuall tried to swing right back in front of my car where she was laying. We also called for the ambulance that took her and her fractured ankle to the hospital. Not one person asked or acknowledged just watched.

Lol no need to get defensive and I think it's great you help out in the community, just the same as alot of people do. As for myself I work with the underprivileged, and am indeed involved with the bear clan thanks! Also involved in a few other groups that go unrecognized. As for the opening of doors etc. that is common courtesy and sadly very few do it anymore so here's a pat on the back for you on that as well. I do good deeds and pay it forward all the time but don't expect recognition for it. This topic has nothing to do with common courtesy, common sense hopefully though. Either way people still need to start helping and not ignoring shaboople situations.

As for the stats Adam spoke of, that's wonderful to see but there are more things that do not get reported than do. There were 5 assaults last week, one pretty severe one that were not reported.

Not saying that there aren't crimes that go un-reported but what you're basically saying here is that the only type of crime-against-person that's gone up is the type that people choose not to report. Why would the proportion of reported to unreported crimes be any different than any other year and do you have anything to base it on beyond asking us to take your word?
