We drive to Winnipeg and back every other weekend. It is a great hardship on our family since dh pays full childsupport (with an increase in the works by the ex) and drives 5-6 hours every other week to get the kids. We have to have a maintained vehicle that is reliable and have you noticed gas prices?  
We have had a difficult time of petitioning the courts to have the ex do half or ever 1/4 of the transportation or even a reduction in child support. So far we haven't had much success but we are protesting and trying to get them to see what is going on. Over half of dh's income goes to cs and transportation and then don't forget the wonderful lawyer bills.....something has to give....  
currently the ex has limited visitation to the bare min to squeeze him into signing the divorce papers. Do the courts care? not in our experience. The kids are really the ones to suffer for adults acting like children.
