I purchased sand in the spring for my kids' sandbox. I got it from a gravel yard and just asked for sand for a sandbox.  
 
At first, it was really soft and almost silky feeling. I've noticed though that if the kids go a few days without playing in it and digging it all up, it gets really hard packed and I have to use a shovel to loosen it up for them.  
 
Is there anything I can do or add to it that will keep it softer?

Do you cover the sandbox? Maybe that will help keep moisture in?

Yes, it's covered whenever the kids aren't playing in it.
