Everything happens for a reason that one I have a hard time with .  
 
no good deed goes unpunished huh

"it is what it is"  
what is?  
saves having to elaborate, I guess.  
 
kinda like 'everything happens for a reason', like me pushing you down these stairs.

“You want to have your cake an eat it too!”  
 
Well, heck yeah I do! What good is a cake if you can’t eat it!

Well, idomatic expressions sometimes don't sense on their surface.  
 
For example, the cake one means that you literally can't hold one to a piece of cake if you eat it i.e. you can't have it all, or you want something unreasonable. Many langauges have a similar expression (although they don't usually involve cake, the French version involves butter).  
 
No good deeds go unpunished is the idea that even when you try to do good, sometimes it turns out bad.  
 
The "it is what it is" is an expression that you can't control what's going to happen. What happens will simply need to be dealt with.  
 
But the "whatever" drives me nuts too. LOL

Once you eat your cake then you no longer have it-so in otherwise you cannot have it both ways-that one makes sense.  
 
It is what it is-that one is kind of irritating. I can see using that phrase if you don't complain and someone asks you (for example) "aren't you bitter about losing that promotion to the new guy" and you reply it is what it is. However-someone complains for an hour about missing out on something then ends with "but it is what it is". Hmmm. You should have said that first and skipped the complaining!!!

I absolutely HATE the new cultural phenomenon "take the road less traveled".... any Robert Frost fans here? For those that don't know where that saying came from and the ACTUAL meaning of poem (which is actually called "the road not taken") take 30 minutes and educate yourselves about it! It is interesting! And hopefully people will learn something and stop using it incorrectly!

My better half and I had a whatever moment around 6, she was leaving work and texted to ask if I wanted anything brought home, I replied no, then she asked of I wanted some beef sausages, to which I replied "whatever". The next message had to do with if I didn"t want to talk that was fine. The word, or phrase, whatever means decide for yourself, or make your own choice, in a debate where a person, on either side says whatever, it is a polite way of saying the debate over, and regardless who days whatever no one is backing down.  
Really nothing wrong with the word since we are all allowed our opinions.

I don’t get the saying “It’s so thick you could cut it with a knife”. If the tension, or whatever, is really so thick, wouldn’t you not be able to cut through it? Don’t we always cut through things with a knife? It just has never made sense to me. I even googled the origin and what it means and I still don’t get it!

These sayings all make sense to me.

Well then, just where the heck is it????

I have the flexibility to understand where sayings come from or what they are intended to mean without being offended or worked up about them. (Can’t imagine going through my day letting something as simple as a quote or saying bother me). When I hear this particular saying I assume it is religion based (God’s plan or God’s will) and while I’m not religious I understand why people say it and/or believe it.

My grandmother talks about things being "thick" or "close". It's simply referring to the fact that something - like tension - is not something you can typically cut with the knife (because there's nothing to literally cut). But if it's really thick, you can cut it with a metaphorical knife. It's just a play on words and the concept of literal/metaphorical.

Generally, a person who says that believe in high purpose, a higher being, or fate. It is the belief that it has happened as a purposeful part of a plan, even when we're not privy to the purpose or end result of that plan.  
 
It's also a purposeful decision to take something bad and turn it into something good.
