On my way home from a nice hotel in Wpg we frequent often. And found a bed bug in my bed this morning. It makes me wonder how often this happens? Am I naive to think it is a rare occurrence? Have I just been luck so far in my travels? I honestly had to google it to see an image. I've never seen one before. Just curious as to others experiences .. is this getting more common? And also when I get home.. tips to avoid getting any in my house?!

It's common actually. Did you let the hotel know so they can implement their protocol? They can't fix what they are unaware of.  
 
As for home. Everything should be washed and dryed on high heat Suitcases that can't be washed should be treated ( call pest control) before storing on the house. Strip and all clothes into the machine as soon as you get home.

I was once told to keep your suitcases in the tub, bathroom sink, or on furniture. never keep suitcases on the bed as this is how bed bugs will transfer to your home.

I did tell the staff. They were very good about it. Came to our room and inspected beds and room. Apologetic and refunded me for the room. Offered to wash all our clothes. Wasn't really upset at them. Just startled by the situation. Thanks for the advice.

I heard legally they are required to inform visitors of an outbreak, but do they? No.

No.. they don't legally have too any more then landlords do.  
 
Any good hotel has a strict protocol in place to help prevent the spread though.
