We've been doing weekly day trips to various places in SW Manitoba and next on our list is to visit Elgin.  
 
I have looked on MB highway conditions website but am looking for the latest information on road conditions.  
 
One route is to drive to Souris and then south on Hwy 22 to reach Elgin - what is the condition of hwy 22 from Souris to Elgin?  
 
Another route is to drive south on hwy 10 and turn west on hwy 23 to reach Elgin - what is the condition of hwy 23 from #10 to Elgin?  
 
Thank you for any information you can give me.

Both are good highways

They are fixing the bridge on number 10 on route towards lake metigoshe…before Boissevain ..takes no longer than 10 minutes at the most to get through…go that way…kids working are so great with their slow or stop signs…my hubby and I always take a bag of chips and hand to them (or whatever) and yes we wear masks . Fun part of going to the lake .

That is good to know about the construction people!! I always say to my husband that we should give them bottled waters but I didn’t know if that would be weird lol  
 
I’ve been wanting to check out Elgin too to try the restaurant, burning bale I think it’s called? What other things are in Elgin that would make for a good day trip?

DO! These kids would love a “treat” lonnnggg days and if you want just give a note with your name and phone to know it’s safe.. they know us by now, and not one time are they not smiling and so happy . You sound like great peeps

for the information - I appreciate your replies. Definitely planning to have a mid afternoon meal at the Burning Bale restaurant in Elgin as the reviews are excellent. We'll likely go one route and return the other route.

The highway is ok it’s not flat by any means. No patches open as they just did a top coat last year but like I said it’s not flat a couple small dips in the road in a few spots.

Check the hours of the restaurant as it’s good food. Check out the park in town let the kids run wear off some energy. Also check out Whitewater park just east of Elgin. They have a museum just not sure of the hours right across the street from The Burning Bale restaurant.

Hi! If you wanted to easily make a day trip out to Elgin/Whitewater park, I'd suggest some of these ideas:  
 
Drive out to Souris for about 9am, and hit-up the bakery for fresh donuts, pastries and cookies/buns. They have the BEST donuts I've ever had. Good idea to get there soon after they open as they often sell out of donuts.  
 
There are many places to grab a hot or cold coffee/fun drink in town like 49 degrees, Woodfire Deli, and so many more...  
 
Go the swinging bridge, and enjoy your baked goods after you cross the bridge on a picnic table, and check out the peacocks- they seem to be everywhere!  
 
Check out the great local shops, boutiques and museums. Maybe grab some picnic lunch items and snacks from the local grocers for a nice lunch at Elgin Beach  
 
Once done a tour through Souris, head south to Elgin,  
have a swim, walk about, relax on a day off.  
 
Maybe a Burning Bale Pizza for supper?

Hwy 23 west to Elgin and Hwy 22 to Souris were both in excellent condition so thank you all for the information which was absolutely correct. We also looked at the Whitewater Recreational area just east of Elgin - very nice area. Burning Bale restaurant apparently is only open for supper from 4 to 6:30 so it was locked mid afternoon but we did have a nice mid afternoon meal at Chicken Chef in Souris. Thanks for your help
