Question what would you use just in case a animal might be around to scare them off whistle , spray , bells .

Maybe an air horn would scare off an animal

I carry a little garden hoe with an extendable handle. It has a sharp little blade and has good reach. Light enough to carry easily, solid enough to make a good weapon. Can even use it as a walking stick. If I need a noise maker, well, I have a good set of vocal cords.  
 
If I were in grizzly country, then I would carry bear spray.

I also live in the country. And walk daily. Never had a problem with animals yet. A few coyotes that are more afraid of me.

Tied to shoe laces or wrist. They make a constant jingling sound and animals know you are coming and will avoid you. They are usually not dangerous unless you startle them.

These are perfectly legal to use on four legged creatures to defend yourself. IF you choose to use them on human predators, be forewarned that all of a sudden you would be now using a Prohibited Weapon. There, fair warning to all.  
 
If you do carry. A pepper spray for personal defence against aggressive dogs, coyotes, bears et. ensure you are not spraying against the wind as you will be the one getting incapacitated.  
 
As with any other weapon, practise with it first, become competent and always use it safely. If you cant commit to that, tie little bells in your shoelaces.

In the mountains the guides say if you want to see bears, wear bear bells. They say the bears are curious of the sound and will want to check it out. Not that I have bears to think about in my area. The suggestion of an air horn sounds like it would give most wildlife a good scare.
