My Thai wife with about 50% or better english skills is thinking about applying at Maple Leaf. Can she ask NOT to have anything to do with the killing process or is that something ALL new hires must do at some point?

She would be okay working on the cut floor or in packaging, she just does not want to be on the actual kill floor? Or do you mean she does not want to work with the meat at all-so she would be in the offices instead, with some position where she wouldn't really have to go on the floor at all?

She doesn't want to see the actual killing but she should be ok with packaging or cutting the meat.

Unfortunately because it is a unionized workplace she will not get to decide where she will be going, but the good news is that killing is a higher paid position so new people will no go there at the beginning she would need to apply and get trained if she ever wanna do that, but there is a possibility that she could be sent to the front end kill floor where the killing is happening just she wont be killing the hogs personally.

She can apply for any open position. She doesn't have to work on the kill floor. There are lots of open positions at maple leaf. She would never be forced to go and work on the kill floor.

Just what I was going to say. She can specify that she does not want to be on the kill floor and she will not have to work there. MLF does not rotate workers through all positions, so if she starts out working on cut she will not be moved to kill unless she wants to move there. There is also Sanitation, if she wanted to be on that team.
