Equipment is so expensive and technically advanced now that it’s difficult to put a rookie in the cab. Also safety is a huge consideration. I would suggest that you try and get hired with a custom contractor and learn on the job. Getting a class 1 license first would help. Custom guys are always looking for help and likely would be willing to train someone with the right attitude. I expect they would start you off with more basic work like manure spreading or verge mowing for quite a while before moving someone into a million dollar combine or 4wd tractor. You’ll also have to be prepared to work long and unsociable hours during the busy season.

I will work towards getting my class one first

I think it would help make you more employable and look more motivated. Most grain farms at least and custom operations run heavy trucks and a class 1 license would be a great asset to you. There’s a lot of driving schools but I went with professional driver training in Winnipeg.

What they don't teach ya in driving school is how to start off with a fully loaded grain trailer. Back her up four feet this will compact the soil.  
 
Now your ready to move forward, also equipment roads are very narrow - loaded truck has the right of way. Never move onto the soft shoulder let the empty truck take the ditch.  
 
The new combines have GPS steering, the operator is the eyes on the ground for loading the grain cart.

52 and have been driving since I was 15, I grew up around heavy equipment, moving trucks in the yard etc, I have a complete understanding of how hydraulic and air systems work so I’m sure that will help me in obtaining my class one.

Sounds like you’re most of the way there already. All good experience.

In Manitoba is about $8500 to $10000!!! I don’t see me doing that anytime soon. Lol.

Yes training for Class 1 is quite a bit more expensive now then when I trained but it’s a longer more involved course now as well.  
It might be worth asking some employers though as sometimes larger farms or custom operators are willing to help train the right person. It’s hard to find good people that can be trusted running equipment now so employers are often willing to help.  
Check with the training schools as I think sometimes there is government help or loans available. Theres a guy in Elkhorn who is good , 4GK enterprises and another one at Virden (forget the school name but it’s Hank Kyle).

I am ever glad I got my class 1 over 20 years ago where I could just go take the tests. It cost me $100 for medical, written tests and road test and a case of beer to my buddy I borrowed a truck from and I passed my road test first try!!
