A lot boils down to money, like most things. It's hard to make news profitable, and large companies need to be accountable to the shareholders (i.e. they need to pay people who own stock, which anyone who owns mutual funds does, in all likelihood).
It wasn't "banned" from social media - the Canadian government tried to put measures in place to make large, profitable corporations pay for the news content they put on their feeds. Instead of paying, those same companies pulled the news.
It's a good reason why supporting local news outlets like Brandon Sun, as well as public broadcasters, like CBC, remain critically important.
