Exploding Deep Fryer

Hubby was making home made fries tonight using the Ez Clean Deep Fryer I got him for Xmas last year. We were sitting at the Kitchen table when it exploded. Hot oil everywhere. He managed to get it unplugged just before it expoded the second time just missing him. And than it exployed the third time.
Any one every heard of this before? Or have a reason why this may happen.
PS - if you are free this evening we could use some help to clean it up - it is a huge mess. :-(
