If Quebec ever did seperate
1/26/2009 at 6:30 PM
I've been thinking about this lately. Especially with the coalition talk. So here’s my rant.
Does anyone truly believe Quebec can survive on its own if it was to separate from the rest of Canada? Or is it just an idle threat to get what they want, like a spoiled brat? The distinct society claim is a load of _____. EVERY province and territory is distinct.
Here's a list partial of what they would lose and problems that would come by separating:
Federal equalization payments - they're always crying they don't get enough
Everyone would lose various federal payments - EI, Welfare, childcare and a whole host of others
Many federal programs and projects
Say goodbye to all the federal jobs, federal building would close.
Say goodbye to the Canadian Forces, the bases will close, all equipment removed, ect. If they want a military they have to get everything themselves.
RCMP gone.
No longer able to use Canadian currency.
Other companies like Air Canada and many more will move out of Quebec.
What happens to anyone who was born in Quebec and now lives in other parts of the country? Are they now illegal citizens?
First Nations in Quebec, what happens now?
There would probably be a mass exodus of people leaving Quebec for other provinces.
That's just a small list: it could probably go on for pages.
If the separatists get their way and separate, Quebec on its own would fail so quickly and would be begging to rejoin.
And those who don't want to separate know this. I think the separatists know this also and are basically blackmailing the rest of the country. The negatives greatly outnumber any positives (if any). There’s dire consequences for the residents of Quebec should they separate.
Anyone else share these views?
