Painting help

I purchased a gem of an older truck camper and I'm refurbishing it inside and out...a do-it-yourself project.
I want to paint the outside. Which I think would need automotive paint...would that be correct? Primer and paint?
Specifically I want to paint 'effects' not with an airbrush, but brushes and tools.
Any suggestions for preparation, and other tips would be appreciated.
