MTS email and Mozilla Thunderbird users

Does anyone here use Thunderbird for their outlook (mts email)?
I can receive emails, but cannot send them. It's worked for months, and has suddenly quit. I called MTS who say it`s a Thunderbird issue and not theirs.
I had installed AVG free, and deleted it, thinking that is what was causing the problems. But even with it uninstalled, I still cannot send.
Does anyone know how I can fix this? I really need to be able to send emails as it's the main email addy that I have.
