Half Way Tree

Where is the half way (or halfway) tree located?
Some say it is the tree on the south side of Highway #1 about 2 km west of the halfway point.
Others say the half way tree is on the north side of #1 about 6 km east of the halfway point.
There have been news stories, songs and lore about each one being the official half way tree.
So which one is it? Or do they both qualify?
