Mother and child saught after failing to attend court

So i was skimming CNN as i usually do throughout the day and this heading caught my attention:
Mom, son missing in forced chemo case.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/05/19/minnesota.forced.chemo/index.html
Apparently She failed to attend court in a case revolving around her child's cancer and the parent's refusal to have him receive anymore chemotherapy sessions.
The court is ordering her detained and is arguing that the child be placed in the hands of social workers, further the child has been ruled to have diminished capacity by his court appointed attorney because of his age and illness. Thus making it close to impossible for him to represent himself and state his feelings.
Personally I'm at a loss, normally i have a fairly logical way in which i want to approach things but this has so many variables. i can understand the parent's perspective (and the right to refuse treatment that could very well be this boy's wishes), but i can see the court's perspective as well (this cancer is treatable with conventional methods). I was wondering what you guys thought.
