EI question

Does anyone know if EI back pays to the last day worked? My husband was temporarily laid off and assumed he would only be out of work for a short time so he held off applying for benefits until recently. He has been without work for over 2 1/2 months now. (His company reassured him that work was coming, hence the wait time.) Any and all helpful comments would be appreciated.
