Clothing and Class

There has been alot of discussion in a few threads about whether clothing choices reflect class/status. I thought perhaps here we could address the topic in an appropriate setting.
My question is, do you feel clothing choices reflect some sort of "class" or "status?" Does buying expensive clothes somehow make you better than the person who shops at a department store/chain store?
