House insurance

Just want to know roughly how much should one pay for house insurance these days?
A friend of mine has a larger house (about 1,800 sq ft per level) and he is paying about $400 with claim history. Mine is a lot smaller but yet I'm paying close to $700 and I've never claim anything.
If I were to change insurance company, how can I find out the exact footage of the house cause the new insurance agent will need to know.
