What this 2012?

I received a worried call last night from my goddaughter (9) she was told from someone that in the year 2012, the world as we know it will END!!!
Now, I'm not to sure what to say...and she's a bright kid she knows a lie when she hears it!! So, can people tell me on Decembr 21, 2012 what the big scare is...and what should I tell her!?
