USB ports disappeared?? Help please!

So last night I was deleting files off my flash drive and then tried to move some pictures from my camera to the computer, connecting through one of the USB ports. As soon as I plugged in the camera, the computer screen blinked and then the mouse and keyboard stopped working (wireless, sensor is USB). After trying to reconnect, change the batteries, and turn the computer on and off, I ended up having to haul out the old wired ones to get the computer running again.
But...
Now I have no USB ports showing up under computer, where as minutes before this happened I had like 7 showing up. I cannot connect my camera or my flash drive, and no matter what I have tried I cannot get the keyboard and mouse to connect either.
Device manager says they are working, but obviously they are not.
I am not a computer savy person at all, but if anyone has some suggestions it would be much appreciated.
Oh, and I have the horrid Windows Vista on this thing (its hubby's computer). Don't know if it matters.
