houseplant question

I think I made a mistake and am not sure how to correct it....I planted a houseplant in a terra cotta pot but just left it how I bought it from the store, I didn't paint it with a sealer or anything. Now I can smell the clay of the pot when I water the plant. Is there any way to fix this...like seal the outside?
