Shipping pets to other provinces

Just wondering if anyone has had experience in shipping pets to other provinces. Reason is my sister has purchased a pup and lives in Alberta, and was going to drive down here to pick it up, then drive back home, which is 18 hrs. I know they get shipped, but how safe is it on the pup, and is it reliable.
I know someone is going to say"can she not get a dog there", but she knows the parents of the pups and the previous pups from the same parents, so wants it from here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
