Our kids are recently out of the school system and I feel your angst in this situation. Our wants are simple.
All we ever wanted was for our kids to walk to the nearest school for the day. Is that too much to ask in a small City like Brandon? It's not like we're living in a huge City!
This BSD situation, has exploded into a monumental mess. For people on this thread, I love the pro-active stance and going to bat for your children, who deserve much, much better, and I find it all so very pathetic that you poor souls have to deal with this for the very sake of a community school for your own kids in your own area.
As I may have mentioned before, we moved into our area mostly planning for the sake of our small young toddlers then, who would be going to the local school at some point soon, knowing that their walking to school each day would be as smooth and comfortable as possible.
LOL..Come junior high, the odd snowstorm seemed like the end of the world to them eventually, but they were lucky kids and they know it now. Took 'em a few years to realize, but it's all good now.
As a parent, I gave them the 'I walked 2 miles in a snowstorm' schtick. They survived. LOL.
Seriously now, we really did want to be LIFERS in our area, planning where we wanted to be and raising our young family through Elementary, Junior High and High School. It was a perfect fit. And guess what?
It INDEED turned out to be a perfect fit at that time.
Our childrens school years spanned from about 1992 - 2006 in the BSD including graduation for both kids). I'm sure that most of our kids social upbringing was on the schoolground and walking from school, not that far from home. They were comfortable and safe and most importantly, close to home.
Currently, this is a very dark time in both the Brandon School Division and the community.
I appreciate the BSD Trustee's very difficult place with this dilemma, but at the end of the day, it's all about kids.
Your kids should be walking to the nearest school wherever you live and be able to come home at lunch..or stay at their home school with a bagged lunch...not bussed all over HELL's Half Acre or not allowing a lunch program.
I so hope this means things may be resolved and life can return as we know it here. The kids deserve it.
It's all about the kids and a childhood as it should be.
