Scam - phone call about computer viruses
4/12/2010 at 6:19 PM
Got a phone call from a person who identified themselves and the company they supposedly worked for. Because of the broken English of course I couldn't understand either.
He proceeded to ask me if I was aware that computers were crashing all over the world from trojans, viruses etc. I replied yet. He then told me that his company was working at protecting computers and would like to walk me through the steps so my computer was protected. (yep sure you are)
I asked him where he got my name and phone number from. He assured me that he got my information through my updating my computer at microsoft. (Sure he did, since he asked for me by name and whenever we do all the initial things to our computers it is in my husbands name)
He asked me to turn on my computer, told him it was on. Asked me what o/s I was using. I said if he had all my information from all my updating then he was surely aware of what o/s I was using. He assured me that they had 100's of 1000's of people to call and they simply did not have time to get that information, they were just getting the names and phone numbers. (yeah, sure)
Once I said my computer was on he told me to go to start and click. Told him I did. Then did I see the start search line. Yes I do. Now I was to type in eventvwr did I do that. Yes I did. Then he asked me what I saw. I asked him is he really thought I was dumb enough to turn on my computer, go where they asked me to go, type something in. Guess he didn't like that cause he hung up on me.
I did enter eventvwr into google and from what comes up it is a scam, they would of continued and then asked if I saw something specific (which would be in any computer, when I replied I did they would tell me that their techs would gladly fix my problem and from there they would of been asking for banking information etc.... Give me a break
Any one else get a call like this?
