Miss. Sandra Schira, (age 13) writes in our local Daily Paper, (Thursday) that it is a shame that our ‘Men in Blue’ will not be working out of a ‘Green’ Police Station.
She states that her family and herself are working hard to cut down on their carbon emissions by walking, biking and buying energy efficient appliances.
I have to agree with her, we have just spent $2 million on a new garbage disposal system aimed at recycling our garbage. The city has purchased fuel-efficient buses and cars to save on energy costs.
If a citizen decides to build a house she/he has to follow Building Codes that are enforced by the city controlled Planning Department.
These codes include minimum wall thickness, energy efficient heating units, and air exchangers.
Why does our city council think they do not need to follow their own rules when constructing a building of their own?
In her letter Miss Schira does not mention it, but I am sure she realizes that she and her peers are the ones who are going to pay the extra energy costs that will accumulate in the future.
I think this young lady is wise beyond her years, and has more knowledge about saving our part of the planet in her little finger than the whole of city council have when sitting in council Chambers.
