invite to a wedding... unsure of what to wear!

my fiance's friend has invited us to his wedding next weekend, and the reception is being held in a Ballroom. Now I've never been to a fancy wedding like this before, so I'm unsure of how to dress. Do I have to wear a dress? Or can I just wear dress pants and a nice top? Some people have said I should wear a dress because its in a ballroom and others say not to. I know in the end it is my decision of what to wear, but I don't want to be under dressed or over dressed for the occasion. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
