Daycare??

Just wondering how many daycares actually teach things. I was going over the alphabet with my 4 year old step son and i'm not sure if he was playing around but he didn't know his letters. He knows his alphabet but shouldn't they be teaching him what the letters look like? I know that daycare is a place for your children to go when you need to work but isn't it educational?
