Firefox web browser question...

My wife has a laptop with Firefox on it and I just used it for the first time in a long time and when I press the back button it does not go back. I have to press the button at least twice, and in some cases three times. Does anyone know what may be causing this or the solution to it? Any help would be appreciated.
